Hello, All! I'm very excited to have joined your forum! Looking forward to sharing and learning with you all.

I am a new mother of a young piggie named Musztreipen. We call him Moose. He is a curious little guy. We've had him for one week. He runs and hides in his "man cave" when we are near. He does not take treats or veggies from the hand yet so I'm out of ideas on how to build trust with him. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

Now that he's settled in a little, you need to start holding him a few times a day to get him used to humans. Rather than chasing him down to catch him, take a shoe box (or other small box) and cut holes in the ends. Gently shoo him in there, put your hands over the ends, and lift the box out of the cage. Put him on your lap with a blanket or towel so you can partially cover him, and feed him yummy treats. They usually love cilantro and dill, or you can feed bits of fruit (just not much, it's way too high in sugar). You can also give part of their daily veggie allotment that way.

Read Guinea Pig Education, Care, Rescue and Adoption at Cavy Spirit for more information on GPs and their care. You should consider getting him a friend -- they're herd animals, and usually much more happy with one of their own kind around.

Also read the "read me" and "sample menus" on the Diet and Nutrition forum here -- good information there.

Your piggy needs unlimited long strand grass hay all the time. Grass hays are timothy, orchard, blue grass and brome. Alfalfa is not grass, it's a legume, and isn't suitable for regular feeding.

Post back if you have other questions. And we'd love to see a picture of Moose!
