Treats Healthy homemade treats?

I want to make Alex some healthy homemade treats. I know it will be less expensive and probably way more healthier than what I can buy in the stores. So my first question is: do you have a favorite recipe for homemade treats that you could share? I watched a few videos on YouTube about making treats. All of them are baked in the oven at high temps. High temps destroy some of the vitamins and nutritions. I have a dehydrator which doesn't destroy as much of the nutritional value as high temps (almost the same nutritional value as fresh). I prefer using the dehydrator to make my own children healthier treats. So my second question is: wouldn't it be better the dehydrate the treats instead to maintain the nutrition? Third question is: how often do you give healthy treats?

I'm pretty new to the guinea world, but I would say that the best treats you can give your guinea are raw fresh veggies and sometimes fruit. They love it AND is healthy for them with care.

Yes, the healthiest treats are fresh veggies and fruits.

In addition to the not every day fruit/veggie, I give cattail heads and frozen watermelon rinds as treats. I don't know what it is about frozen watermelon rinds, but I open the freezer (and Mooshy knows the difference between the fridge and freezer opening) I get louder wheeks than I get with the usual salads! She has to crunch them with hay, one little bite of this and a little bite of that. Very cute! I don't care for watermelons much myself and it's not the season for them so they are more expensive but for her, I buy it, throw out the flesh, and freeze the rinds which some I keep a little watermelon strip on them.

My piggies favorite treats are little watermelon slices. They eat the whole thing, rind and all.

Watermelon rind is a favourite amongst my girls, but they also enjoy celery leaves, cherry tomatoes and corn husks.

You CAN Make treats for them... I've made plain treats for mine and they loved it... Very simple!!
Simple is key for it being healthy for them.. I know everyone says *No Treats* but this IS healthy for them and if they like it then why not?

Grind your pellets in a blender
Blend your veggie/ Fruit of choice
Add the fruit/veggie mixture to the pellets
Blend everything together.
Add water until you get a nice dough texture.
Roll your dough up to the size of your choice. (smaller is always better! Cooks faster!)
Bake at 350 until done (Time varies greatly with how large you make the cookies)

*These treats are not to replace fresh veggies daily*

ADD: You can use your dehydrator! It may take a bit longer but there will be no chance of the treat becoming burnt on the bottom.

I personally wouldn't suggest feeding this. Guinea pigs need raw, fresh vegetables, the closer they are from being picked from the ground, the better. Altered vegetables (Tinned, cooked or preserved) have a poorer nutritional value, I'd also be worried about the cooked food upsetting their digestion.

That's why I want to dehydrate it instead. I know from researching healthy snacks for my children that using the dehydrator fruits and veggies really doesn't lose nutritional value. One of our favorite treats is dehydrated pineapples. It's like candy around here and is just as healthy as fresh because I don't add sugar or anything.

It's a matter of opinion, I guess. I've feed it and I know of a few other's who have as well. Every time it's been just fine. It isn't something I would give everyday or even every week but it hasn't harmed mine or theirs.
Like I said, these treats are not to replace their fresh veggies for that day. I am aware that pigs need fresh every single day and would never suggest not feeding it.

The poster asked if there was a healthy treat they could make. I provided it. This is by far the healthiest treat recipe I have seen so far.
Again, it's a matter of opinion. :)

Fair enough. I guess we agree to disagree. :)

Yes thank you for sharing! It does sound healthy. It's made with stuff they need anyways without additives. I do loving giving my animals treats. I can't imagine not spoiling them. I do understand that this shouldn't replace fresh veggies, but it like giving them something special. I will make this up today and put it in the dehydrator.
