I've read all about the goods and bads about guinea pig foods and how some of the most popular foods for pigs are really bad for them, and it made me wonder about what I'm feeding my cat. Does anyone know some good links to sites talking about cat food? I tried google but didn't find what I was looking for. Thanks in advance :)

Hi there and good for your for keeping your cats happiness in mind too! I like to avoid Iams and their sister company (Eukaneuba) for many reasons. 1. I am a Peta supporter and Iams has commited more atrocities against animals that any other company. 2. Cats hate the cat food. They ARE the most nutritious, BUT, the small flat star shaped pellets are undesirable, difficult to eat and can sometimes cut inside your cats mouth. I tried feeding Iams once when i first got my cat and put it up against many other brands such as FortiDiet and Lifesciences and my cat all around prefers either Whiskas or MeowMix. MeowMix is nutritionally fortified as well and they love the taste as well as retailing for a good price. give it a try!

Thanks for the tip! I should have mentioned my cat is slightly overweight...and by slightly overweight I mean obese...I'm working on getting her weight down so whatever brand I get needs to be diet food. I currently have her on Purina Healthy Weight Management. She's lost 2 pounds on it so far, since September, so I might just stay with it. I just wasn't sure if it Purina is good or not.

How big is your cat? Hehe...

Here's some great info:

Good companies to buy from: https://www.iamscruelty.com/res.asp

Vegan/vegetarian foods, information, and supplement info: (broken link removed)

Hope that helps a bit. :)

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out! My cat is 16lbs...Down from 18/19....but I think a lot of it is genetic. Her whole family is overweight :p And even at a normal healthy weight, she probably wouldn't be under 13 or 14lbs..she's big framed.

I don't think any dried foods are good for cats. I mean, why would you feed a carnivore something which has corn or rice as a main ingredient? They do need something to prevent tartar build up on their teeth, which is one of the reasons dried food was invented.

'Chicken by-products' might be listed, but this doesn't mean chicken meat, it means bones, skin, feathers, diseased meats, anything that is not fit for human consumption.

Here's an explanation of how pet foods are made: https://www.allourpets.com/htmls/petfood.shtml

I used to feed my cat Whiskas until my sister explained why my cat loved it so much. In the manufacturing, they collect used vegetable oil from restaurants and spray it onto the outer surface of the food which makes it tasty. This oil has been used in deep frying and cooking and spends months going rancid in large tanks underneath the restaurant's floor (or outside) until someone comes to pump it out. Mmm.

Here's another good website about cat food:

(broken link removed)

Excerpt:

[In Nature, a cat's prey] would never total more than 1-2% carbohydrates... However, commercial dry foods may contain as much as 45% carbohydrates. A diet high in carbohydrates will result in obesity

If its cat meat then apparently (in the UK anyway) the cheaper the food is, the better. the more expencive meats are apparently too rich for alot of cats systems, and from my experience (I grew up rescuing cats) whiskers, and kittycat versus a supermarkets own brand, the own brand seems to be prefered, and is alot easier on their bowels. our cats all also seemed to like pedigree puppy mix so maybe how we fed our cats isnt the best example of how to do it. Just thought that the meat side may be useful/interesting.

If you ever have any concerns of whats in your dog or cat food... go to
(broken link removed) and you will be able to compare foods and also find out whats really in our so called healthy pet food.

I feed my cat Healthwise cat food...
I stand by the natura products.

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH FOR POSTING THAT !!!
You're welcome. Shocking, isn't it? I'm glad my sister told me about it or I'd never have known.
