Have guinea pigs taken over your house?

Some friends stopped by today for a visit. They had never seen our house so I showed them around.

I couldn't let them in the front door because the girls' play area is in the entrance hall up against the door. So, I had to let them in through the garage where we passed by the laundry basket for the soiled fleece, etc. and the garbage can full of soiled hay and bedding.

Next I showed them the TV room, where the girls' C & C cage takes up a good portion of the room. Onto the Rec room. There I have jammed all the furniture in one area so I could make room for the new table I built to put the girls' cage on. I will move them downstairs onto this table when it gets too hot in the TV room.

The area inside the basement door is littered with coroplast, an exacto knife to cut it, tape measure, etc. I am making a new coroplast tray.

I showed them the guest/sewing room next. Fleece, towels and Babyville diaper fabric covered the futon. I am sewing pee pads to go under their houses.

In the hall outside the other guest room is a table with all the supplies needed to change the litter trays. The storage room used to store bikes is now occupied with bales of hay, disposable bedding, containers of pellets, extra coroplast and trays.

I hadn't realized how two little guinea pigs could take over an entire house. I love taking care of Zoe and Abbey, but I also love all the piggy projects.

I stay with my bf and his mom so I can't realy take up that much space exept for our room in the house for guinea pig stuff.
If I had it my way they'd be in the living room in a huge cage and I'd have a sewing spot and all that good stuff.

But for now I find it funny that my guinea pigs hay ends up everywhere. Sometimes even the poopie. I like to watch TV with them in the livingroom and sometimes when I clean the cage I dont notice the lil poops that fall on the floor on the way to the trash can. (I now have a little can in my room and a dust pan and hand broom so I dont make that much of a mess)
The hay still goes everywhere. It bothered me before, but now it's like I enjoy it more that I see my piggies happy and healthy.

It's funny you talk about the hay. I was very thankful I had just vacuumed the whole house yesterday, because I usually have hay strewn from the basement all the way to the TV room.

Oh my gosh my bedroom looks like a barnyard because of the hay.
Between George, and my rabbit, (even the cats like to eat it occasionally) I have hay everywhere. It used to bother me so I would vacuum it up every other day or so, but now I don't really care as much. I like that my room looks like it has animals living in it. Because it does.

i live in a small 2 room condo by myself. which is good, because i don't have to worry about anyone else nagging me about the boys and their stuff. yes, they have taken over. most of my livingroom area is taken up with their cage and a good chunk if my bedroom has their supplies. as you guys already said - when you're in love, you don't seem to mind the stuff that comes along. the one thing i have decided to do is not talk too much about adding to my herd with others. my co-workers and friends thought one or two pigs was cute. now that i have five, and 2 cages i have started to get "the look" - like i'm the crazy guinea pig lady hmy:. right now, i'm considering adopting a pair of special needs pigs, and i'm kinda on the fence about whether to do it or not, but i dare not even mention it to anyone else or they'll have me locked-up on a psych hold!
more than the stuff for me, is the time it takes to care for them - making fleece bedding, cozy cups, buying and cutting up veggies, spot cleaning and laundry. but i find it soothing somehow. at the end of a long day with "stupid" and aggravating people problems, i come home to the guys and stand there brushing poops, while they chase my hand around and play tag with me. they start squealing as soon as my key slip in the front door! sitting on the sofa at the end of the day, watching tv and sewing cozy cups is very calming. all in all - it's a pretty darned good life - for them and for me. and i'm old enough now - in my 50s - to no longer care so much what other people think of me. :silly:

@jacqueline Your post made me feel so much better. I'm in my 50s too and live alone so I can do whatever I want. I have 3 piggies already and want more but I'm afraid to tell anyone lest they think I am nuts. Maybe I'll just keep quiet and keep all the joy for myself. Their stuff sure does take over though, but it's worth it just to see their cute little faces every day.

My husband and I use our computers for everything, so without a TV in the living room we've been able to devote a lot of room to the pig's stuff and floor-time area. I store everything in here. I'm pretty good at keeping things tidy, but there is a lot of piggie stuff.

We don't host any gatherings at our place, so I'm not worried about guests.

I'm 20-something, so unfortunately can't hop on the older lady party train. Lol

@unaspirateur and I share a single-bedroom apartment. We like to joke that the pigs' cage is a larger home relative to their size than our own apartment is to us. lol The cage is on a 5' x 2.5' table along the living room wall, with their supplies and stuff stacked underneath it. They kinda own that wall of the living room, but the rest of the apartment is relatively free of their influence, other than the occasional poop, hay, or bit of Carefresh that somehow makes its way elsewhere.

geez - i almost forgot about the refrigerator!! on any given day, there is more food in there for them than for me, and it's certainly healthier! i had to re-adjust my own grocery shopping list and needs, paring it down, to afford THEIR fresh veggies! but i wouldn't trade it for one minute. as a bedtime snack, each pig gets a tiny stick of carrot. well, newman, one of my "senior" pigs, will run all the way from one end of the 3X5 cage to the other practically skipping in delight, and then does this fancy little dance with excitement. makes me laugh every single time!

my room is taken p by my 2x7 cage. I am constantly on this form, and I always have a pig in my lap! The whole bottom level of my fridge is full of veggies, and I have a 2 storage chests in my room for their stuff! I have hay everywhere and I'm always sweeping poos. My room is guinea pig central, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I can't jump on the old lady party train either, I'm only 15 !

Isn't it wonderful to be 50+. I just don't care what people think of me as much as I did when I was younger. I agree it is very comforting to have the mess around. I love taking care of my girls. It gives me a special purpose to my day.

Let's hear it for all the grown-up ladies in our presence! Don't you think we've earned the right to be a little crazy? Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm pretty proud of being a warrior and of my battle scars.

Yup, another "grown-up" here- I'll hit 50 in July!

And yes, piggies have taken over my house, too.

Lol, whenever I mention cage expanding to my dad, he goes, "That cage is going to take up your whole room by the time you're done!" Not really, just my half of the room. But, yes, I think the pigs have already taken over my room. Their stuff is everywhere! I don't think the house will be taken anytime soon though, my mom doesn't like the pigs to be upstairs, and I keep all my piggie projects either in my room or in the basement family room.

im 16 and have worked my way into the biggest room of the house for all my 5 piggies & their clobber haha! they have a 3 layer cage that is 40 foot squared that i am planning to extend a tin up to my waist for theyre pellets and a bigger one for their hay! i have bought a divan bed for the draws to store theyre towels and fleeces and they have a set of draws taller then me for theyre toys! haah theyre run and outside toys have taken over the majority of the garage too, i really do love them though ahah

I'm working on my boy's big cage which will take up a good chunck of space, and if i get it done in time I'm going to try adding a third pig. I also have cats and a dog that i have to account for which kinda narrows how big I can go. But I'm trying to give them as much room as possible! It dosnt help they are restricted to my room which is the smallest in the house. I swear when i have my own place they sill have a room to themselves!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like we live around the guinea pigs, LOL. My front room used to be my pride and joy, as it's where I display my extensive collection of comedy and tragedy masks and knick-knacks. It's also the only spot for two large cages, it's pretty much Amy and Borat's room now. Their cages are on two big plastic sets of drawers, with other piggy supplies stacked nearly, and stuff often overflows on the futon in there. The carpet always has a layer of hay and bedding bits.

When it's piggy playtime and neighbors come to the back door, they have to work their way around the huge swimming pool that's the piggy floor time play pen. It makes the family room somewhat of an obstacle course.

Hay or poopies can turn up anywhere in the house. I accept it as a fact of life, much as I accept the all-too-frequent cat vomit that my kitties love to present me with.

i have a ball python in the living room so my room became my guineas room as long as i'm clean and it does not smell they could take over all they want they are definitely worth it

I wish my house could been taken over by guinea pigs. Husband wont let piggy stuff leave the immeidate area of Whistles cage.
I'm still trying to convince him to let me get a 2nd piggy.

I am getting ready to adopt my 5th, and final pig (I am out of room!). When I started my piggy "obsession" (as my hubby calls it), we turned an old "wash room," in our house into my piggy room. So I am lucky enough to have a room for them. Even though they have a room to themselves, I still find bedding all over my house. My fridge is also overtaken with pig veggies and fruit. Love my pigs.... My hubby just rolls his eyes and tells me I am crazy. So with 4 (almost 5) piggies, 3 dogs and a frog in my house...Along with my 2 kids (ages 4 and 5). I am one busy lady!
