Hi All,

My aunt had a GP that just recently died. She is not getting another and gave me some odds and ends that she had, a food bin, a hay holder, and a wooden hidey house. My question is this...her GP was 5-6 years old and presumably died of old age...I brought these items home and scrubbed them really good with soap and water. Is there any reason RE-using these items with my piggies should be a problem?

Thanks!

It would be ok to use them but instead of scrubbing with soap scrub it with vinager and water it makes it so the guinea pig's can't smell the old guinea pig.

Thanks! One other thought...the house I have is made of wood and I havent washed it yet nor put it in thier cage, is it ok to put that into the cage without washing it?

I wouldn't put it in unwashed. The old GP could have sprayed on it and they pigs wouldn't use it if the GP did. I would wash it but I am not sure how to do so, you probably could wash it with vinager and water and let it dry outside for a day.

You can bake it. Wood can harbor mites.

Guinea pigs don't really spray or mark like rabbits, and I doubt they'd care unless they are boys, and her pig was a sow.

I've witnessed a guinea pig put it's bum in the air and spray.. but it was a female in heat. My wooden hidey house has been weed on when the piggy jumped on it... is there any way your Aunt's guinea pig could get on top of it? If so, I would definately wash it.

Like rabbitncavyluv said. Bake it in the oven like you would for sterilizing pine cones...someone please find that temp/time and post it here. That should take care of any pee/poop/spit/mites/food/drool/trolls/mushrooms or ogres.

But what about Gremlins? I've had a problem with Gremlins.

Gremlins are the creatures that pull apart the connectors on your C&C cage causing it to collapse. They don't usually infest hidey houses.

Gremlins don't seem to be able to cut cable ties though. It's usually best to use them if you have an infestation of Gremlins.

Thanks so much! Since I've used the cable ties...no more collapses each time I want to vacuum behind. Gremlins be gone!
