Okay, so my friend just got a guinea pig, right? Well, I know it has a URI.. It has the first signs of it (sneezing, Sniffling, Rubbing of the nose) And she already had a guinea pig a few months ago.. That had a Uri and died from it.. She was too late to get it to the vet, which I insisted her on doing.. I didnt want her to end up like me and Mr.Pickles.. But Anyways.. She still has all the other pigs antiboitic left (tribrissen) And I was wondering if it would be okay for her to give her pig that? I think its a broad spectrum antiboitic but Im not sure.. But I know the gp has a Uri.. I dont want it to be too late for the poor little guy.. Because she dosent have the money to get him into the vet right now. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Timmeh (Lorelei)

Anyone?? I really need to find out if this gp can take this.. The sooner the better.

It's safe as long as the piggy is young.

Yes, the piggy is six weeks old :D

Okay, then it's fine. The other name for it is Bactrim, I had to search on Guinea Lynx because I never heard of the other name for Bactrim before!

Please make sure you weigh the pig and fiqure out the proper dosage.

Yeah, were giving 0.2 of a cc.. twice daily.

How much does the pig weigh?

around a half a pound? To a pound maybe?

You really need to get a scale and weigh the pig so you can give the proper dosage. If you give too much, you can kill the pig, if you give not enough, the bacteria will develop a resistance to the drug and the piggie will only get sicker. This is why it is important to see a vet. But if your friend refuses to see a vet, you at least need to weigh the pig so you can dose properly. Good luck!

Well, I called the veterinarian for my friend (as she is shy...) And I asked if it would be O.K to give a six week old the medicine.. And I asked them about the dosage.. And they said that 0.2 would be just fine.

Well, 0.2 ml of Bactrim is the correct dosage for a 320 gram pig, so unless the piggie is very tiny, that is not going to do any good.

Truthfully I have to say that I think your vet sounds very unprofessional to advise the use of antibiotics on an animal that has not been examined and to suggest a dosage for an animal whose weight is unknown.

I hope the pig will be ok.

He is a VERY small pig. He is the same size as the last one she had... Im planning to make her take the pig into the vet... This isnt her regular vet, you see the regular moved... And when we called about the pig today around noon we just found out....

Good luck with the little one, I hope you can get her feeling better quickly.

Thank you sooo much for all your help. Sorry if I sounded a little offensive before, But I had lost a guinea pig to this... And I dont want to believe that it can happen again.. :( And then I lost one with creptus in its head (Kind of like a birth deffect...Dent) I havent got another gp since.. So Im trying to give hers the best care i know.
