guinea pig living w/ hamster..

..is that okay? i have a guinea pig and a hamster in the same cage, i've had both about 3 weeks but they don't fight. but when benny (the hamster) comes out of his box to eat, chester (guinea) kind of does this purring thing, which i don't know is bad or good .. anyone know? the cage has 2 floors so they have room and everything, and the pet store near me doesn't have anymore guinea pigs, but i would like to buy another when they get more cause the site says that's good for them. but is it the same if his buddy is a hamster, instead of a guinea pig? does it make much difference?

I've never put my pigs with my hamster, so I can't tell you about their behavior together. I have read that it's not always a good idea because the two require different food. That's what I've heard from a health standpoint.

It's not a good idea at all - they have different nutritional and habitat requirements, different sleep patterns and your GP will end up many times the size of the hamster.
Your GP will be best with a same-sex or neutered/spayed GP companion.

hamster's are solitary animals. they don't like to be around any other animals, not even hamsters.
its intersting that your hamster and pig get along. my pigs are scared of my hamster. anyway, it would be quite difficult to monitor their diets, and how would you make sure that the pig wasn't eating the hamster's food and vice versa?
further more you don't need to buy a pig you cna always adopt one from one of many rescues.
