So on Friday my son was holding our guinea pig and he jumped out of his arms and hit the wood floor about 2/3 feet down. He cried and then began dragging his back legs. Saturday morning I took him to the exotic vet and they had to put him under to give him X-rays and luckily nothing was fractured. They have him metacam for 10 days. They believe it is muscular and are hoping he improves in the next two weeks. He is eating normally but only wheeks only a tiny bit which is very not normal. We can pick her up and she doesn't seem to be in pain, and the vet also agreed. I am also giving her 50mg of calcium daily hoping it helps. Any other ideas what else I can do for her?

Lots of comfy beds. Try to give her some convince too like putting hay lower or on the floor. Maybe putting some squishy towels or blankets on top of the bedding (assuming you use fleece) they like to cuddle up in those and give her the opportunity to work her legs, but if she is tired more another day make sure everything food water and pellets are all in the same proximity. Hope that helps 😊

I'm confused. Is this a male or a female? You refer to it several times as him and several as her.

They really should have given him some steroids, in my opinion, to reduce any possible swelling around the spine.

But no, don't make the bed really soft by putting towels or blankets on it. That just makes it much harder to move anywhere on the bed. If you've got cuddle cups that he can get into, those are ok.

Confine him/her in a small area (if you've got an old pet store cage, now is the time to use it). Don't pick him/her up. And don't give extra calcium -- there's no point in inducing a bladder stone to go along with the injury. Just feed good quality veggies and pellets, that's enough.

Thanks for the reply. I have made everything very comfy and easy for her to reach. I didn't think of working her legs out but I will try tomorrow. IMG 6911 Here's a pic of our baby.

So cute and yeah don't do calcium. Its not really gonna help and just will cause bladder stones. Don't try to work her legs just saying if she wants the exercise herself then that's fine. Just all the needs like food and water need to be close to a favorite hide so she can get to them easy
(I'll refer to your piggy as she because I don't see their genitals in the photo)

I do that all the time with the him and her. Sorry she is a female. I have her on the paper bedding. The vet didn't think steroids would help her much I'm not sure as to why. I will ask the Dr about the steroids and the calcium again tomorrow. She always has fresh greens and her pellets and hay.

Don't exercise her legs. Just let her be in a small area until she shows you she's feeling better. Then you can expand her territory.
