Guinea Pig Breeds

I noticed that several of the pictures on the site are mostly of the short-hairs.

I have 2 Abyssinians (Chelsea and Hazel) and 2 short-hair crests (BèBè and Valorie). My two short-hairs are more into eating, sleeping and just being loveable "blobs". The two abyssinians are very active, jumping, exploring etc. and doesn't like to sit still too long except at night when they sleep.

I guess I'm just asking if anyone else likes/has one peticular breed more than another due to personality traits etc..

Thanks,
Georgia

I love Abys - they look so cheeky and charming, and I know my aby (Charlie) is just that! But I really don't mind what breeds I have - guineas are guineas, whatever breed they are, and I'll always love them all.

Oh I think that came out wrong.. I had just noticed the personality difference between the breeds and wondered if others noticed it or preferred one over another. With all the pictures of short-hairs, it just had me wondering. Piggies are piggies as far as I'm concerned and they are all adorable.)

Actually, guinea pig breeds were only bred for their looks. Specific breeds don't have personality traits. Short hairs just seem to be the most common type of guinea pig. THe only difference is if you like the specific breeds' hair-do or not.

Can you back this up with links/personal experience? I find that certain characteristics ARE linked to the breed. I do believe that (at least my) Abys are much 'cheekier' than short hairs. I loved my rex's to bits because they both were independent and knew what they wanted, and exceptionally inqusitive. Cuddle time was on their terms. They were two teddy boys, completely unrelated.

I believe, at least from my point of view, that each breed is different but all are wonderful. Dogs have different breeds, cats have different breeds, the majority of which have a temperament type linked to their breed. I admit that I'm sure most guinea pigs were not bred for temperament, but I can't see how there could be no differences between breeds at all.

I have a silkie. He is very shy and quiet. He is just pretty. When I have taken him to the vet, everyone comments on how beautiful he is. I have only seen him popcorn once or twice. He will sit on your lap and just take the cuddles and petting he thinks he so richly deserves.
The other 2 are brown, short hair, with white on them or around them. They are more active and are both big talkers. During lap time they are more active and don't want to sit as long.
Maggie is a TSW I was told. I think somewhere in her past she was abused. When I hold her she lets me but there is always a look of terror in her eyes. She stays in her hidey house most of the time. (I'm hoping the new baby will help her be more social.)
She is now poking her head out when I come in and talk to her or to give her treats.
A big step for her, when I put the food dish down is to crab a pepper and RUN back to the hidey house.
I don't know the breeds very well yet. I am learning. All I do know is, I love GP's!
They are the cutest creatures and I never tire of them.

I have all short hair and they run around up the ramp and everything then they let you hold them and groom them [

I have short hair and they jump and run around all day they even get more excited when I put fresh food and fresh hay in the rack but then angain they also love attention

Now my short hairs will popcorn and run around but when there is food around they would much rather plop down and eat. Now the other two do more popcorning and jumping on their houses up to the next level of the cage. They are just so funny. They only eat when they are hungry.)

I have one agouti, one dutch, one tri-colour and seven TSW's. I love the TSW's coat colours and their personalities. They all have similar personalities, nosey, noisey, affectionate (licking other piggies) and extremely playful.
