My teddy breed pig gets quite a chunky/sticky grease gland. I am not getting it all clean with a normal bath and scrub. Any tips on what works best. I don't want to ecessively bathe him because of his breed.

thank you :O)

I Have the same question!! My English Red Crested (Henry) has longer fur towards his bum and his gland is really bad! His brother Oscar's gland was the same way. Do some boars just have over productive glands or something?? I've tried giving Henry a bath, I've tried brushing it out which is not possible...any ideas on what else I should do?

You could wipe that area with a damp cloth

I heard you can put Dawn on it and it helps.

What's Dawn?

Dawn is a dishwashing liquid. Could that be a little strong though?

Hey, can anyone give tips about what's the best way to give guinea pigs baths? I've given baths before to my guinea pigs, but it's very clumsy, to say the least, and you can tell they really hate it. I'm always worried about getting stuff in their eyes too. I currently give them baths in the sink where it's really shallow. But they like to go to the bathroom in it, which is kind of gross, so I have to keep draining the water out and adding clean water in.

Sounds like a pain. My baths only take about 5 -10 minutes, so they don't really have a chance to pee. I too, wash them in the sink and pour water all over their body with a cup. The water in the sink is 2ish inches high, and I fill the cup up with water from the bath.

You know what's funny? I think my guinea pigs know I don't like it when they pee - they literally go as soon as I put them in. Very naughty. It discourages me from giving them baths. =)

Its ok though, only need to give them a bath 2-3 times a year. Mine know when to pee. As soon as I pick them up I have a wet T-shirt, as soon as I put them on the rug... a wet patch. Argh!

Well a wash cloth doesn't cut it. :O) That grease is sticky. My other boar always has a clean rump. I don't want to pick at the fur too much and cause any irritation.

You could cut the hair around the grease gland. My pig Oreo(passed on about 3 years ago) was a long haired, and always was matted down there. We just cut the hair. Didn't have to wash it all the time, and it didn't really get matted or anything.

Dishwashing liquid and scrub on a piggie!? Doesn't sound like a good idea.. I'd rather let my piggie be less beautiful than give her an irritated skin!

Good idea Ruby Piggie 2. My boy has that teddy fur so the haircut should be interesting lol.

Lol, good luck. Oh yeah, be careful- Oreo hated it, didn't like us back there, lol. So we always had to have 2 people- One holding him steady, the other clipping away.

Anyway, do you have a large picture of your avatar picture, of your piggie in the bath? It looks just so cute!!

I do have a large pic. Where should I email it LOL

Actually a drop of dawn dishwashing liquid on a grease gland helps a lot. It does not dry out skin and takes all the grease away. Several of the gl members use a drop of dawn to clean their boars grease glands.

Yes, I agree with Chatty, Dawn has also been known to clean animals involved in oil spills. It's very gentle.
