I would feed a puppy food, and give Nutri Cal for puppies. Always helped perk my fosters up.

Aleks Thanks for the update and glad she's doing better.

This one? The list of ingredients doesn't look that good.
The first few ingredients:
Corn syrup, soybean oil, malt syrup, cod liver oil, cane molasses, methylcellulose

Won't it be better just adding cod liver oil to the food?

You don't feed large quantities of it. Just a squeeze on your finger. It doesn't stink like cod liver oil does. I also used a supplement that went onto their food, can't remember the name of it now. Was expensive but worked really well.

A lot of people (vets included) push NutriCal, but I'm with you - the ingredients aren't really ideal. You don't want to be providing empty calories. I do think cod liver oil is a more nutritious option and I wouldn't mind the odor; also, there are more nutritional benefits with something like that than the equivalent of Karo syrup, I think. The overall goal shouldn't simply be putting weight on an animal by any possible means, but rather focusing on providing a solid nutritional foundation. Sugar, carbs and otherwise empty calories might cause an animal to bulk up, but is also likely to be detrimental in the long term.

I guess I always used it because empty calories were needed, along with a protein supplement, and vitamin B12 shots. I always had really really bad fosters though. Most of them could not stand to feed themselves when I first got them in, so at that point it was just a matter of pushing the calories to get them some energy, and go from there
