I'm going to give it a shot.

I did read over the Fleece project. I gotten my Fleece, washed it 7 times and dried it 7 times. Gave it a test of water with the Fleece on top of 2 layers of towels and I don't really see it wicking through. But I guess this is normal for many right? Any pointers for those who mastered the fleece?

Here is the Fleece I gotten from Johann Fabrics. It came with two!

Sometimes it takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes for moisture to wick through. It won't happen instantaneously.

New to the forums, hello all!

I'm trying out the fleece bedding also, I'm making a bigger cage for my piggie Chester this weekend, and getting him a new friend to play with since I don't have as much time as I should to keep him company (with me being a student and all).

One thing I was curious about is how to keep the fleece bedding down. It seems like it would fold up with them running around unless it is attached down somehow.

And what is the best free underbedding that doesn't require any washing or buying of new materials? We're in a drought in the Southeast so washing towels every 4 days doesn't seem like a good idea.

It's great to hear you will get Chester a friend, but I hope you will still make time for both of them for bonding and cuddling.

Actually, you don't need anything to hold the fleece down. As long as you purchase a length which is slightly longer than what you need for the cage, you will be able to tuck it under whatever under bedding you decide to use. However, some members use bricks to hold down the fleece or binder clips to clip the bedding to the coroplast.

I suppose you can use newspapers under the bedding, although these aren't technically "free." I don't know how well this would work though since they would get wet and stick to the fleece, making a big mess. I use towels under my fleece and I wash them every week. If you buy extra, you only have to wash the towels every two weeks. You should wash the fleece weekly anyway, so you could do ~2 loads to take care of the towels and the fleece.

Hope that helps!

Here is my Fleece set up. It didn't take long to get it all done. I have two layers of towels and then my Fleece on top. So far the pee from the GP's are wicking through which I'm glad to know that all my washing and drying was put to good use. But I did put a box in with the old bedding to keep them from peeing on the Fleece. Both my GP's were popcorning once I had placed them in the new setup. I'm glad to know they like it. Now to see how Fleece works with me as the weeks pass. Thanks for the tips you guys.

Cute fish fleece!! I also have a fish fleece mine is blue with big orange gold fish all over it :). I do have to say though that those cords so near the cage concern me. You should probably tape them to the wall and move the cage a bit further away to make sure the piggies don't get ahold of them.

To address the other poster - I highly recommend using towels rather than a disposable bedding under the fleece for several reasons. 1 - the smell and 2 - the cost! You don't need to wash it every four days. I use 3 towels so three layers of towels with fleece on top and wash once a week. I have a 2x3 cage. You'll save so much money by using fleece and towels rather than an alternative bedding underneath. I have a separate litter tray in their loft which I fill with carefresh. Since they pee quite a bit in there (I put the hay in a bin above the litter tray) I'm able to go a full week in between washings. Newspaper would be quite smelly and would probably stick to the fleece if you tried to use it underneath.

I'm glad that you like the fish theme. They like it as well, they just mumble to themselves happily when they walk on the fleece and sometimes burst with energy popcorning on the fleece. I did move the cords away from the cage with the same thought they might get to them when I had finished placing in their cage to the corner. I will say I'm happy with the fleece and happy with my piggies bc they have been using the temporary litter box pretty well which means less stuff to pick up off the fleece. :)

Maybe you could use cloth diapers like some people do here? That way you might not have to wash as many towels as you can spot clean more. I plan on doing it that way too as having 3 kids produces quite enough laundry for my liking! Love your fleece! So cute!

I was thinking of using velcro tabs to hold my fleece down but I'm not sure if that would be more of a hassle than just tucking it. Guess it'll depend on whether my piggies decide to burrow under the fleece or not!

Hi,

I found that a camp blanket worked better than a fleece. no need to wash and dry all the time, its a camp blanket with a water proof bottom. from any shop's about £4.00. only problem is now they are not selling them as its out of season. lucky I have 4 already though.

hope that helps
