Hi! I have a piggy we adopted around Christmas time and he is thriving in his C&C home, but I think he would like a companion. I have read that the best way to introduce a second pig is for it to also be male and to be a baby. THe thing is, I'm still new at this piggy thing and I don't know much about piggy ages. What constitutes a baby? And have I gotten the right advice so far? Thanks in advance for your input, suggestions and help.

How old is your boar?

An adult is one year or older. A baby is younger than that since they are not fully developed/ grown until one, but ideally, you'd want a 2-3 month old or younger if they are an adult boar. It depends on personality sometimes too though.

Is there a rescue near you? They can help you match piggies.

Thanks for your quick reply! Well, I utterly failed to ask how old he was when I adopted him! (embarrassed) He looks full grown to me. That's about all I can say, I'm afraid. Will a Pet-CO type pet store know how old their piggies are? I don't think there are any rescues around here - I did a search from this site once and came up with nothing. I will try again.

I wouldn't trust anything a pet store says. Did you buy yours from a pet store?

I've certainly heard that and am taking it under serious consideration this time around. Also I have done more research and have found a great place nearby for cavy adoption!! Yes I got my first piggy at a pet store. Thanks for the help, y'all.

A good way to determine the age of your boar is to check and see if he's gone through puberty yet. Check and see if his, er, "parts" have dropped. (trying to post this without offending anyone..) I think that happens when they're at least a year old....but I'm not positive.
I'd say your best bet is to check with Ly or Teresa and see if they know anything about finding out the age.
