Hey guyes! New here and I need your help,

My brother and I have two piggies. We got them at the pet store when they were babies and have had them for a year now. We wanted two females but peanut ended up being a boy so we had to seperate them. Now i have a C&C cage for peanut(dont worry gizmo has one two; shes our sow). I want to get a male friend for peanut because he only gets to visit gizmo when we are supervising. So in April im getting another friend for peanut but is it alright putting the new friend with peanut in the same cage after being introduced in seperate cages for a few weeks?? And, if so, how long do they have to be in seperate cages before they can live together.
I'd appreciate anybodys comments.
Please reply ASAP so i can start deciding on other important things.
Thanks you very much
bye for now, Oscar

This webpage should answer most of your questions. There is info on choosing a male for a male, introductions, and quarantine:

www.cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm

Take a look . . .

That helped alot CavySpirit!! Thanks alot.... any more comments on this though? thanks again!!

I had an adult male, the daddy and it took me four months of them being side by side in cages. I also had to introduce them slowly in a playpen area very supervised because my Peede was very dominating. Fight would start but and I had to separate. I was finally able to put them together and things worked out alright as long as they all had there on space.

getting a new male...

I was lucky... I brought my second boy home when their C&C was ready, so they were introduced to the cage & to each other at the same time. Also my boy was only 5mo & I was introducing him to a 3wo baby.

They got along fine & have not had any problems so far. Made sure they have plenty of room to give each other space (2 levels) & I can separate them at any time if needed by blocking off the access between levels & leaving them with 2x3 space each (my cage is 2x3 on 2x3 + 2x3 on 2x3, girls side & boys side)

What size C&C do you have? Do you have provisions for keeping them separate if they don't get along?

don't believe anyone that says it "can't" be done... I'm proof that it can :)

Good luck

Shell :)

Thanks guyes!
Shell, my cage is 2x2 for my bore because i made it only a week ago and i'm a first timer at this site and at making C&C cages. My provisions in case that it doesnt work is that i have a spare store bought cage that i could use(witch will be the one ill be using to introduce the two) but then i have more money to spend on bedding etc. Do you think it would be alright if i seperated the 2x2 cage in half only at night and that way they can play with each other all day.
Note: That is only the worst case scenario
I appreciate your help very much
I'll be one tomorow, but i got to jet for now.
bye!

getting new boar

Hi again oscar54 :)

first things first... are you planning on BOTH of them sharing the 2x2? If you are... this is not actually enough room for 1 adult cavy & definitely not enough room for 2.

If you look at the site again https://guineapigcages.com/ 2x3 is the minimum space recomended for 1 adult cavy. The minimum space recomended for 2 adult cavy is 2x4. Are you able to expand the cage? If you want to add a second cavy, you really need to be prepared to adjust their cage to suit.

I'm sure you could use the store bought one temporarily when introducing them (don't forget that the new cavy really should have 3 weeks quarintine before introducing them). When you are ready... place the cages side by side so they can talk to each other.

When you first put them together you need to be there to separate them if they do start to fight! & if they got on during the day in the same cage then they would get on during the night... I mean if you were to split the cage in half (not a good idea as definitely not enough room) the only time you could take the divider out would be when you are supervising to separate them if they start to brall.

If you can't afford at the moment to even expand your cage to suit 1 adult cavy... please don't get the second one until you can afford to give them the proper space.

look forward to hearing back from you...

Back Shell,
Those were some very useful tips you gave me. I apreciate all the help. That does sound like a good idea waiting for more money, i should be able to make a new bigger C&C cage towards spring time since im spending all my money right now on the ski hill in our town( i love skiing) YES IM FROM CANADA AND THERES ALOTOF SNOW!!!:p. I look forward on keeping you informed on how things are going.
Thanks again Shell, lol i'v said thanks so many times.
bye for now.

Now What?

Now that I know what to do and how to do it , what kind of guinea pig should I get? I like Abyssynians because of the way thy look. I dont want another long fured guinea pig because its too much to trim and I dont like hurting the piggy. So, any recommendations??

Hey Oscar :)You must be enjoying the snow! :) The last time I saw snow I was 3yo. But that's beside the point... :D

I'm glad to hear that you will wait til you have the money to make them a proper cage :) If you can make the new cage totally separate from anything else, then you can introduce both of them to it at the same time. This way neither of them has any prior clam to the territory.

I've read a post somewhere that the person had two boars who got along fine during floor time, but if they were put in the same cage together they would fight. It could be that the original sees it as his territory!

If you are getting a friend for Peanut... are you going to get one for Gizmo too?

Ohh... and I've been meaning to mention something else too... did you say that Peanut & Gizmo have supervised visits? Does that mean you let them run around together while you are watching them to keep them apart? If it is that, I thought I should mention that that is actually very risky... If gizmo hapens to be in season when they are together, all it would take is 3 seconds for Peanut to get her pregnant :/

Umm... about what type to get... that's a decision you'll have to make. I've always liked the straight, short hair breeds myself. There are just so many to choose from! Do you have any idea where you will be getting a new cavy from? You could see if there are any rescue shelters in your area & go visit them. Or see if there are any advertised in classifieds.

Shell :)

Choosing one

I completely agree with Shell, that it's up to you on the breed that you choose.
It's ones own preference. I have two Abyssynians and 3 American Short Hairs. I prefer the short hair. Or should I say I used to because I just adore my other two that aren't
