I am moving into a 1 bedroom apartment in the near future, and will possibly be getting one of my boyfriend's dogs (a chihuahua-dachshund mix). He has seen the guinea pigs before from behind a baby gate, and is interested in them.

My plan is to baby gate him in the bedroom with me when I am sleeping, and never leave him in the same room as the pigs unsupervised. He'll be crated in the bedroom with the baby gate and/or door shut when I am not home.

I'm having trouble finding a table to fit a 2x4 C&C cage, but not sure what else to do.

What other adjustments can I make to make sure my piggies are safe and sound? Any tips for letting pigs have ample floor time, keeping them safe, and basically letting a dog and pigs live in the same house?

I've held off adopting any other pets because I'm so protective of my guinea pigs, so any suggestions are helpful!

You can build stand from grids.

Ikea has some tables that would fit the cage.

Another idea is to use a table you could find, and put a piece of plywood on the top.

You could give the pigs floor time when your boyfriend takes thd dog out, or you could crate the dog.

Has the dog barked at them or anything? My two chihuahuas were interested in my piggies when i first got them, but then they got used to them and now the pigs are more interested in the dogs than the dogs are of them!
For the dog and the piggies to get used to each other, you could get one out at a time and let the dog sniff them, that is what I did. But make sure to keep an eye on the dog while your doing this, if he has that wild look in his eyes and seems tense, I would put the piggy back

You can also let him sniff the piggies through the grid cage! It's good protection, and if he tries to snip, he will hit the grid and not your babies!
I know the top one seems scary, but once my friends chihuahua came over and saw the pigs and snipped right at one of my girls! But she had fast enough reflexes to get away and the chihuahua hit the grid. Of course that dog hasnt been over since!
Hope everything goes good for you!

I agree with ZebraKisses.

I would try to introduce them. I've never had a problem with my dogs getting along with any of my rodents (even free-range bunnies). My dogs and cats all got along with everyone else. Mice, rats, hamsters, rabbits. My Charlie (best dog ever, a terrier-mix) passed before I adopted my first piggy, but my chihuahua is fine with them. She's 15* now so she doesn't care to play with the pigs, but she does like to come in while I'm cleaning the cage and eat their food.

In the end it just depends on the dog and guinea pigs' individual personalities. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of dog and pigs becoming friends just yet. lol

*EDIT: 16 next month

My dog (yorkie chihuahua mix) eats their POOP! What is that about? Lol. It freaks my husband out.

Guinea pig poop is the best dog snack ever! I've never met a dog that didn't love it.
