Furry Concern

Like all animals, I except guinea pigs to shed. Frank sheds a lot. And I notice that when I stick him on my lap and pet him, I have this brushing effect. All this loose fur comes off his body and piles up on my lap. So of course, I've started to cove myself with a towel. It helps keep fur off myself and protects me when he gets restless and nippy.

Now all of this being expected, I have found thing I didn't expect. Sometimes, in this petting process, sometimes chunks of fur still attached to some skin comes off of his body. I mean, it's really weird and kinda gross. They are these little flakes of skin that come off that are still kind of furry. Is that normal? Has anyone experienced something like this? He did do this during a vet visit. She took a stool sample to check for parasites and none were to be found. So I am not really sure what to make of this. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Re: Furry Concern

Sounds exactly like a fungal infection to me.

If that was happening when you took the pig to the vet, you need a new vet.

In any case, it sounds like you need a vet visit. Could be mites or some other parasite, too.

Common gp parasites are not tested for in stool samples.
