In a couple of weeks we are going to be adopting a new piggie (yay) and as we are adding a 2x3 upstairs to our cage I thought it might be a good time to experiment with fleece. We use vetbed on our current set up and I'm really happy with it, but adding another bit of chunky vetbed to the weekly wash will mean either another washing machine load (on top of the current two) whereas fleece could just go in with towels maybe. And also, it's a LOT cheaper than another two bits of vetbed, eep.

Anyway! The rambling point of this is: is there anywhere in the UK to get funky, colourful fleece? Some fleece that is anti-pile but with a jazzy design? I see so many snazzy fleeces in cages from across the pond and the few I've seen from over here say they got their fleece from the US. Is there somewhere I can get it over here? Is there somewhere I can order it from over there?

Help me get my funky fleece! *grins*

Oh dear, I had to thank you for that post! That last line just has me in stitches. Reading it straight it sounds fine but I have tunes and songs going round in my head...you brightened up my evening!
Also I am interested too. I have some relatively funky fleece from Dunnes - it's double-sided, white with blue-grey swirly circles on, and solid pale blue on the other side. Only thing is if you cut it to size, you have to sew around the edges to keep the sides together.

Congrats on soon-to-be-adopting-a-new-piggie! You know we will want to know all about her (or him). Are you adopting from Thistle Cavies? I'd love to visit there sometime. I order my pigs goodies and medical products (Critical Care, syringes, probiotic etc.) from there and wouldn't order from anywhere else.

I'm thinking about going fleece, but I have decided to shell out a bit for it. I am ordering a custom job from Hammocky Hammocks, so that when I order some accessories from them the fleece will all match (yes, I am a bit weird that way) Anyway, they have some gorgeous colours of fleece. Can't wait!

Wow - you are adopting another piggy - and you didn't let us know??;)!!!! Who is it? This is so exciting! Is he/she from Thistle (to repeat CCC) - I have been holding myself back from a few piggies up for adoption - they have been named with Ms recently - and it has been so tempting! However, they are all reserved now...Is it Purdy??? Will this be you up to 5 piggies? I will be SO interested to hear how you get on - being in a similar situation, piggy-wise!

Anyway, back to the initial question!

My funky fleece was exchanged for Scottish goodies with another member on here. Perhaps there will be someone willing to do another swap? (I know there are many of us UKers who would LOVE more funky fleece!)

Fleece is picking up here though - at first all I could get was plain flat colour, or paw prints! Now you can get prettier colours and some patterns. I have been successful in Tesco (pink polkadots at the moment - fair sized blanket for £4.99) (Think they have blue footbal design too). Ikea have some fleece - I bought a smaller, but very funky blanket there (for £4.99). Au Naturelle have quite a lot of blankets - I have pink striped one from there - I'm sure it was there that had a pale ble fleece blanket with kitchy pink roses. Was tempted...

Try also eBay, and google around on-line. Do let us know if you find anything good!

Edit: Aha - forgot about Hammocky Hammocks (online) - they do have some funky fleece!

Do tell about the new pigger!!

There's a Remnant Kings fabric shop in Stirling and, I think, one in Glasgow that sell some lovely fleeces.

Hee, did I really expect to get away with no more piggy information? lol I don't know how you guessed Jane but it is indeed Purdie who is joining our herd from Thistle Cavies, I can't wait! I saw her on the TC site and fell head over heels in love and set about persuading the bloke, and now she is set to be our 5th (and last so I'm told ;)) piggie. She needs to live alone to begin with and perhaps for quite a while as she isn't a fellow piggie fan, so after quarantine we're going to have her live above the others in her own little flat :]

Expect many photos when she arrives back here in (less than!) 2 weeks time!

Thanks for all the fleece ideas, I think I'll look on the tesco website (our local one is titchy) and I know there's an Au Naturelle in Dundee I can check, and e-baying sounds like fun if dangerous - who knows what else I'll end up with, hehe. Remnant Kings sounds interesting, it's been a long time since I've been to Stirling actually... I think we'll need to visit again this summer sometime.

Hammocky hammocks sounds like a terrific idea, the Trippy design is really tempting actually. If I may ask BeckyBoo, what are you ordering in terms of type(s) of fleece and how many layers and so on?

Let us know when you're going up as I'll probably be around a couple of days over the next two weeks!

I'm jealous - want want want!

I'm ordering a double layer of fleece (just the ordinary fleece they do, in turquoise) with a double layer of towels in the middle, all stitched together into a kind of cage carpet. My plan is that if it's reversible I would be able to flip it over halfway through the week, only having to wash once a week. If it's too thick to fit through their machines I may have to get single layers and change it twice a week.

I have yet to be sent a quote through for it, but the rest of their products are very reasonably priced, so I'm hoping it'll be do-able. I just think it'd be much easier than trying to stop the girls from burrowing under all the layers!

Also, that way I can order all the accessories to co-ordinate with it. I'm a bit of a freak about that :)

I'm not sure about where you live, but Walmart has a pretty wide selection of fleece- some are very colorful! :) I got some very girly pink fleece that has moons and stars on it for my two females; it's very cute!

thalestral - Purdie looks simply adorable. Congrats on your soon-to-be new piggie! Will you keep her name?

The only really funky fleece that I have is this:
fleeces008.jpg

It's an aquired taste! :p. I also have yellow fleece with butterflies on it and some fleece that resemble the sweet "humbug", different brown and white stripes. I got all my fleece from the local market for £6.50 a metre!

Thanks Muffin, Planet Fleece fabrics and material - Buy Sewing Products, Fabrics, Patterns, Notions, Printed, Plain Fleeces online looks pretty useful :)

That sounds good Beckyboo, I think I'll need to read through the fleece project thread here and get up to speed on the various methods!

We are keeping her name yes, "purdie" is a word I use a lot to describe pretty things so I thought it very apt when I saw her name :) We're going up on the 21st I think it is (Harry Potter day!!) to pick her up. I'm so excited! It's kinda bad timing with Rosie still being unwell but as soon as I saw her I knew she was part of the family, I guess you can't choose things like that :]

Well is may not be too 'funky' but I bought a fleece big enough for a 3X4 in poundstretcher. Its red and got a cartoon dog on but it was only 2.99 so a bargain really.

I'm also looking on ebay, if you look for the ones that are being bid on, not the buy it now ones then you can get some really quite cheap.

It's weird then because I saw one in either Thailand or Malaysia on tv the other day. A big supercenter. Give them time and they probably will make it over there but many people don't like Wal-Mart. I think they are going downhill since Mr. Walton died.

Will you let us know what price they quoted for what size when they let you know?

Well, they charge by the metre, for the towelling and fleece, and then add on 30% of the whole order.

Fleece: £4/metre for the solid colours
Towelling: £5.99/metre

I am going to source my own bath sheets and post them to them to be made up, since this will save me about £24.

Also, they have experimented with their machines and found that they can't make the double thick pads I wanted, so I will have to have 4 'carpets', comprising one piece of fleece, one piece of towel, so I will have to swap it twice a week. I can always add another layer of towel, or a layer of newspaper if I find I need to.

Hope that helps.
