It's not much as I didn't really get a garden planted this year but it's a little something fresh from the garden for the piggies. How is everyone else's harvest going?

Wowzas, what a lovely little mix of produce! I've never really tried growing anything besides carnivorous plants a couple times (I grew a big pot of flytraps, sundews, and pitchers all from seeds and they grew really big until someone left them out in the sun and they fried) but I've never tried actual vegetables or fruit.

I'd love to try, and I know Bob would really appreciate it and my stepdad loves to cook so it'd be great for him too, but I never knew how to start. Maybe I'll start up a little tomato plant or something simple to get started, it might be a fun hobby. :)

Since you're in my neck o the woods I can tell you that you could plant cold weather crops now to harvest before the snows come. Something nice and easy to start would be lettuces. You could even grow them in a pot! Cukes and peas can be planted now to and harvested before winter. Kale and plants of that nature can be started this time of year too! I'm throwing in some seeds myself this weekend. :)

Thank you for telling me, that's really great to know. I think we have some extra flower pots lying around and my stepdad is planning on re-mulching our garden soon so I can go with him to Lowe's to pick up seeds and soil. Having some fresh lettuce would be fantastic because Bob gets a whole leaf every day and my parents like to make salad to take to work, so it's a win-win!

I'm actually pretty excited about this...I was considering growing some veggies a while ago but I never really knew what to grow or how to start, but I'm confident I can try. Of course, I'll probably end up with some crumby stuff to begin with or beetles will eat all of the leaves or something, but I am hopeful it'll work out. :D

Seeds are really cheap so even if it doesn't go well this try, you're not out a lot of money. You can do it! Just don't over think it. Bob can contribute the fertilizer!

That's an enormous tomato plant that just grew all on its own thanks to one uneaten cherry tomato half and guide pig poop ;) I've done nothing to it at all.

That's true! And I looked up the basics for growing lettuce in containers and it looks like loose leaf works the best, which is great because Bob loves red lettuce. :)

And ahahaha he's a little poop machine--I was actually wondering if I could use his poop as fertilizer, but I wasn't sure. He just poops so much, so if I can use it I will.

And oh my gosh, wow! That's pretty funny that one little tomato could grow into such an impressive plant all on its own.

What a beautiful plate of fresh produce! We are already planning next year's garden. There are only a couple of things in this year's garden that our babies can eat. I don't think jalapeño peppers would go over well. Lol!

:D

I knew I gave mine too much lettuce, a heavy fat head might last 2 1/2 days, the same for the containers of organic baby lettuce. I never add the lettuce to the cup of veggies, I am wondering if I should now.

I only give one leaf a day, and no more. Any more than that is overkill, I think, but it's a nice addition to daily veggies.

It's also nice as an edible plate or bowl. I like to use a large leaf as his "plate" and put the rest of his veggies on top, and when we hit the center of the lettuce I use a whole raddichio leaf as a "bowl" and tear up 2 mid-sized lettuce leaves, or 1 mid-sized leaf and a few tiny leaves so nothing is wasted. Only trouble is he tries to eat the "bowl" first so everything falls out. [emoji14]

(It's a little hard to see in the picture, but it's all on a lettuce leaf. That way he keeps it a bit neater, and the tomatoes don't dissolve in the wood pellets. I don't have a picture of his raddichio bowl but it's the same idea.)

One head of lettuce (or, bunch I guess, as red lettuce is loose leaf) lasts over a week here, but with two pigs I'd assume a single week or less. A head every 2 1/2 days is way too much, I agree, but everyone makes mistakes, and it wouldn't hurt to try again now. :)

Ooohh, love those plump berries! Our garden hasn't been going well this year. We planted cucumbers but they all didnt make it. We have some tomatos and I think bell peppers. And Basil. We will be doing lettuce, I think. Maybe its to late, I dunno :p We were gonna have pumpkins but our landlord thought they were weeds and pulled them out.

Beatrix187 you're in my grow zone as well so you can plant cold weather crops this week and next. Throw some lettuce in now and enjoy!

I've been buying the huge bag of Heritage mix (red and green leaf lettuce) from Gordon food services and it lasts me about a week-week and a half for four pigs and a rabbit.

I think I, too, share your grow zone, I have seen it referred to as number five. I will try for some red peppers, as they are like 3x more nutritious than green or yellow, and my three wheekers manufacture plenty of poop soil additive, for sure... is there a "best mix ratio"? eg 1:1 with soil... 100% poop... 20% poop, anyone discovered?

feeding them from the yard is one of my favourite treats, mine love the wide leafed grasses, dandelion leaves & stems (but only one likes the flowers, too), and they go wild for broad-leafed plantain, which is a rampant weed around my place. I always wash the forages carefully, even though we don't use pesticides, only once in a while do I find a bug, but it also gives me a chance to offer only the best quality pieces

seeds in a packet are super inexpensive, and as the beginning of this thread shows, seeds right out of whatever we eat can "take", too... this is exciting!

You're peppers are not likely to mature before winter comes if you plant now. You need things that prefer cooler weather and mature within 60ish days. If you google "cold weather crops" you should get a list. Then just check the maturity times. Anything over 60days would be pushing it.

We actually had a pretty good harvest this year! We decided to do our garden pretty last minute, but most of our veggies did well! We did plants on our patio for the first time (cilantro, cucumber, and green pepper) and these did great, so we will definitely be planting some more in pots next year. We also grew basil, parsley, tomatoes, and zucchini in the ground. The pigs got to enjoy lots of garden fresh veggies this summer and it really does save a lot of money.
Here's a video I made showing our garden and some cute piggy footage:

I've decided that I'll be putting the work into a piggie garden next year! Up here in Idaho, nights are already dipping down into the 30's, so its a bit to late to plant now. But, I do know exactly what I'm going to plant! There will be a large patch of lettuce, romaine and red leaf. There will be around 15 plants each of Cilantro and parsley, as we also use them in the kitchen. We already have rasberries, but those are an occassional treat. I will aslo have about 10 cherry tomato plants, as my family eats them like candy! I'm sure the pigs would love some too. I'm also going to try my hand at growing peppers and carrots. Haven't had much luck with those, but seeds are cheap so it doesn't hurt to try. I'll also have a few cucumbers, the plant this year was killed when my dog dug it up, that pesky pup! Also, there will be an entire section devoted to dandelions! Our dandelions here are great- they don't grow in the grass very well, only our garden. Some of the biggest leaves I harvested this year were humongous- over 14 inches long and 5 inches wide at the widest. The pigs were in heaven! With six guinea pigs, this should help a little bit with the cost of the veggies. It saves us money and gives both of my families, biological and fuzzy, some great produce. We also compost our piggy wood shavings and poos, it makes great fertilizer!

On a side note, under the composter, some hay/piggy poos must have fallen out. Its all timothy hay that is growing, does anyone know if it is safe for them to eat? Or does it have to be dried first? I probably won't let them eat that, as its in the backyard where the dogs have access to it, but it be worth trying to grow some in the garden? Hmmm....
