free range, somewhat...little help??

Hi there! I am a new Cavy owner and just couldn`t stand the thought of Peppy being cramped up in a cage! But I don`t have a huge apartment, so I just sectioned off a good part of the room with crates and let her have fun. My question is, is it ok for her to nibble on the carpet? I do have newspaper down but not everywhere, and I wouldn`t want her to get sick from carpet fibers. She has a whole 6X4 area to play in and I just want it to be safe! Thanks for any info on free range piggies! ;) Jeanie

Congrats on your new piggy

I don't have carpet but used to have carpet on the second level of my pigs cage. One used to chew it sometimes andshe was ok.

Re: free range, somewhat...little help??

Is she actually nibbling the carpet or are you worried she may?
If she had somthing to 'graze' on while on the floor, e.g. a supply of hay, she might not feel tempted to chew other stuff...

Thanks 4 the info...

Actually, Peppy has a ton of fresh Timothy hay and things to nibble on! She doesn`t do it alot, I`m not sure why she would like the taste of carpet!!! YUCK!
But thanks for the info and for letting me know that it`s not toxic to her. I can`t believe how addicting these little adorable creatures are! I`m gonna get another one soon, and of course build an even bigger pen for them.
Thanks from a newbie cavy owner!

Re: Thanks 4 the info...

no problem. No matter how much hay etc my piggies have they often chew on other things like the newspaper lining there cage. One is far worse for doing it than the others

carpetmuncher-hahaha

when my piggies run free, one of them (henry) always rips up some carpet. my big concern is for my carpet (moving to a hardwood apartment in a week and a half-yay) not the piggy because my henry just rips it up and leaves it there--he doesn't eat it. I'd watch your very closely to see if he even bothers to eat it, but either way, if there was any carpet cleaner residue or anything on it, that sounds a little dangerous. and I know dogs can get in trouble if they eat a lot of something like carpet--it can block up in their intestines and not let anything through, like a clogged drain.

free range flooring....

I too decided to let my piggies run free, they love to gallup across the tundra of the bedroom floor, the wind in their hair, the iguanas food to steal....anyway, I discoved this great stuff called marine vinyl. Its weather proof, mildew proof and pliable. Its used to make boat seats. If you live in a city with a big fabric store, they should have it. It has no smell and the pigs see no reason to chew on it. We sectioned off a room with crates and zip ties like a baby gate, secured on the ends of course! we lined the whole area with the vinyl, going up the walls a little and the front to keep the care fresh in. The pigs love it! They think they've convinced me to give them floor time forever! If you have the space, its really neat!
