Cavy lovers,

Please forgive me as I have committed a cardinal cavy sin. I bought my new guinea pig from a pet store. My original intention was to adopt, but as my family and I were out buying bedding and food for Gog, we looked at the guinea pigs and fell in love. Our new piggie is a male Abyssinian named Mohawk, Moe for short. He is named after the ridge (maybe a crest) on top of his head that, of course, looks like a mohawk. I will have pictures of him up soon.

He sounds adorable, but please, with so many homeless cavies in Ohio, try to adopt next time! I can't wait to see pictures.

Yeah I hear ya too. I did the samething with 3 of em and now I dont go to pet stores.

Are there any stores that don't sell animals in your area? Feed stores are usually good sources.

please adopt next time! but i do know how hard it is not to fall in love and just get them

I forgive you, LOL. I'm as guilty as you. But I redeemed myself, I hope, with Punk's adoption. Can't wait to see pictures of Moe. How's the snow down there?

I've recently discovered Karen's rescue operation in Forest Park, northern suburb of Cincinnati, and not too far from you in Dayton. I haven't been able to meet her in person yet, but hope to visit there soon. (broken link removed)

This seems like a much better alternative to pet stores. I try to stay out of the stores that sell live pets...it's just too easy to take something home.

Ok, alright, I guess I feel the need to make a confession myself. I didn't do this intentionally but I am guilty myself and I really feel bad about it. About a week and a half ago I was in a local mom and pop petstore here in town getting a new wheel for my hamster and I saw this silkie(sheltie) piggie there and I fell in love with her immediately and I ended up bringing her home with me. She is sooooo adorable. I know that buying from petstores is bad and I have adopted 2 of the girls I have. I haven't said anything about her before now because I knew that I would catch hell from some people on this site. I named her honeycomb dustmoppy. I call her moppy most of the time. She is about 4-6 weeks old I think.

So now I have 4 girls and I love them all. I have a smooth short haired (Chatty), a himalayan (Charity), an Aby (CoCo) and now a silkie/sheltie (Moppy).

(From the Diary entitled "Confession from a 39 year old", lol.)

LOL! I'm beginning to wonder if we should add a section to the website entitiled "Confessions"?

Hopefully no one will hassle those who have petstore piggies at home, especially if you're also caring for rescues. And I seriously try my best to stay out of the petstores. When I go in for dog or cat food, kitty litter, etc., I go right to the aisles where those items are sitting....no detours over to check out the animals.

pretty much everyone knows i got mos of my pigs from the petstore, though i did adopt one, i want to adopt another!

And now for your penance. You must post pigtures of your new baby. :D

I get bedding from Wal-Mart and hay and pellets from Oxbow, so I seldom go into the pet store. Resisting an impulse is hard, but we have to resist or we become part of the problem. That being said, no one thinks less of you, and you sound like a wonderful guinea pig parent. Enjoy your new boy! :)

I can tell you all about impulse purchases from pet stores.....couple of years ago, I took my then 9 y.o. son into a Jack's Pets to pick up a couple new tree frogs for the large viquarium he was keeping. I came home with an Australian Shep. puppy!!! (hmmm...frog....dog....they *do* sound almost the same!)

After this dog attacked and almost killed our Silky Terrier and then began attacking (for no apparent reason) our older dog, we had her put down. A very sad ending.

Really, between feedstores, large box stores and internet stores, most if not all guinea pig supplies can be purchased without stepping foot into a pet store.

I hear ya C.C. Thats why I told my husband that I'd rather drive 45 mins to the feed store than going to a pet store cause it breaks my heart seeing all those animals cramed up and couped up in cages and no room. My husband agreed with me and not only not going to a pet store I always want more piggies and he doesnt right now. We now have 23 piggies, 2 mini lop bunnies, and a big dog. no more pets for now but we are getting another dog later on this year though.

The shepherd puppy was obviously bad blood, probably a cross-breed between two aggressive dogs. But I know how it is, to want to buy so bad from a pet store. When I was looking for a friend for Cocoa I wanted so bad to buy this healthy looking guy from Petland, but I quickly changed my mind when I saw their puppies in such poor shape. But I'm happy I didn't get the little guy because I adopted a pig later that day!

Oh! Angelscavies, you're so lucky! I've been begging for my mom to adopt another dog since June.

I am gonna get one thats housebroken though. My one puppy would have been a year old this month on the 16th. She wont house break so we found a home with a fenced in yard for her. I miss my Bella she was a cutie. :( sob sob

Aww, I'm sorry. At least you know she's happy in her new home, right?

We have two feed stores here in town but they carry no products for piggies. They only carry cedar bedding and I am sure NOT going to buy that.

We have one small mom n' pop petstore and I try to rarely go in there. Mainly to get something I need right away and I had to get a new wheel for my son's hamster as the other one was absolutely too noisy. I still feel "bad" about bring moppy home with me because I didn't adopt but I really do love her. I live in Arkansas and while we have shelters throughout the state, there are no guinea pig rescues near me to my knowledge. The piggies that end up in shelters are few and far between and usually at the other end of the state. I am in no way trying to make excuses for myself for adopting is much better. I will take some pictures of my new baby and get them up for you all to see.
