I have been currently feeding Nurtiphase, and just realized that it is an alfalfa based pellet. This bothers me that these so-called "guinea pig formulated foods" really arent the best to feed them, and big name pet stores dont really seem to know what the best is either. I know that foods with seeds/treats/extras are a no no. What is a good brand to feed?

(broken link removed) cavy cuisine, best food ever! There are some other good foods but this is the most highly reccomended.

Dagwell is right. That is the BEST food out there. It's what I and many other members feed. If your pigs are under one year, you will want to feed Cavy Performance, if over one year, Cavy Cuisine.

How long do the pellets last? I'm considering ordering it if it's worth it (with the cost of international shipping).

I go through probably a cup and a half a day. I use the 5- pound bags.

Is there an expiration date on it?

What is a good feed that is not OXBOW? I know Hartz is not good. What ingredients should I be looking for and avoiding? Right now I have Hartz pellet only feed after switching from the *mix* but found out just after I bought that Hartz is not good. I don't want to have to travel or pay a shipping cost just for food so Oxbow is out for now.

No mix, animal products and no preservative called ethoxoquin.

If you can't get Oxbow, Mazura (the plain ones) or Kaytee Forti Diet (the plain pellets) are decent. If you can't get either, then you can consider cutting out pellets. Ypou'll just need to up the hay and veggies. Pellets are not that important overall.

ADP is ok. I think it may be alfalfa based though. Not sure.

When I buy Oxbow, I buy two 10# bags, freeze them and take out a large ziploc bag worth and store it in the fridge.

i just got 50 lbs each of cavy performance and cavy cuisine a price $241.00 canadian. myself i think thats a litte pricey but anything for my babys........ and oxbow is great foods so its worth it !(I guess ill have to freeze it but does it make it lose its nutrients)

Thanks for the replies. I may try bulk buying and freezing.

Thanks for the tip on the preservative too!

I once got Kaytee Forti Diet, and I looked at the ingredients. It had Ethoxyquin in it...

All of Kaytee's products have too many chemicals, but it is the most common brand you can find in pet stores. Of all the different ones they have, it's the most decent.

Mazuri or Proform are better if you can't get Oxbow, or cut out pellets. Just feed tons of hay and veggies.
