I got my flying squirrel on April 2003, at that time I didn't knew anything about flying squirrels

I brought him home 'cause he seemed so sad and in such a bad condition (he is blind from the left eye, due to a fight with another squirrel in the petstore). And only when I arrived home I started searching on the internet about them. At that time there was not much info

I bought a not very big cage

but quite expensive one

This is a pic of the cage in the first days:

Actually it is a bit different. What I want is a bit of help with some ideas so that I can make the cage a better place for my flying squirrel. Considering that I can't buy him a new one now.

Thanks

You can buy smaller grid panels or even take 2 and clip them together to make smaller holes.Use that store bought cage as a sleeping area for your flyer.

I think I haven't understand your idea :( Can you try to explain that to me again?

Thanks :)

sorry lol.K you know the Grids right you can buy smaller sized hole ones.not the standard 1 inch but i think their 2 cms.Small enough for your flyer not to get out. Also if you dont have the smaller kind near you, you can take 2 gridsand attach them together to make smaller holes.i hope that helped :s

Do you think the cage is too small? :(

I am just trying to get some ideas for the "furniture".

Thanks

Look in the photo galleries under Baby Proofing and you'll see pictures of what cavylover's talking about.

I think that since flying squirels are pretty wild so youd need an even bigger cage then you would for a guinea pig.I say its to small but its all up to you :)

I know he would really enjoy to have a bigger cage...but now it's not possible for me to buy him a new one or even build one :(I am just trying to improve this one so that he feels better. I'll be placing some shelves, nest boxes and some new toys for him :)

This is how the cage is now. I'll be placing some shelves in there too, as soon as I find some good material for that.

maybe you could add like a swing under one of the boxes for him to glide 2. And add like a bell underneath the swing.

Can they glide for that short of a distance? I thought that they would need more space to do any serious gliding.

Martin's Cages makes nice cages for flying squirrels and they are affordable.

(broken link removed)

If you're handy at all, you can build a squirrel cage using a pine frame and 1/2" mesh hardwire cloth, but it would require a lot of thought and time to build.

Couldn't you also double grid a C&C cage?

Martin's makes excellent rat cages- like this one-

But- the other cages (hedgehog+guinea pig) are still a little small). I don't know how to juge a flying squirrel cage.

Wow! That is awsome. That would be a cool Hamster cage if you put coroplast or some sort of mat over the wires so they don't hurt their feet.
