How exactly do you use fleece? And do you still need coroplast if you have fleece?

Yes, you still need coroplast. Fleece is an alternative to shavings such as aspen, carefresh, pine, etc. Fleece is the fluffy blanket-like material. To use fleece as an alternative, you have to line the bottom of the cage (coroplast for C&C cages) with layers of newspaper, then put the sheet of fleece on top of the newspaper.

The reason why people might choose fleece over wood shavings is, you won't have to spend money on shavings because you can simple stick the fleece into the washer and re-use the sheet of fleece over and over again. Second, a lot of people (such as myself) like to leave their cage door opened so the piggers can have their free range according to their own schedules and not ours, but the problem of using shavings is the piggers often carry all sorts of stuff (ie,. shavings, the poops stuck to the shavings, the hay stuck to the shavings) along with them when they come out of the cage, which makes the room terribly messy.

I've tried using fleece before, but for some reason the cage began to stink very very quickly (very quickly as in um...not even 1 day). And I had to switch back to using shavings. But other people find it very easy and convenient.

for lots of people, fleece seems to work really well. As for the smell, sometimes its just the pigs and whether or not they are natural stinkers.

i know of someone who had two pigs on fleece and she only had to clean twice a week, and there was NEVER any trace of smell. When she got a third pig, the place would stink up in a matter of a few hours after cleaning, all from cavy number three. (when she got her third pig, she made the cage bigger too, so space wasn't the issue)

so, it just depends!

I have a quick question: do you sew the layers of fleece and towels together, or do you just lay them on top of one another? I've heard both. Just wondering what you guys do.

i would probably just lay them on top of each other, so if needed, one layer could be changed sooner/later than the other.

Ok, thanks, I thought so too. Any other ideas?

mncavylover, are you thinking of trying it on your piggies as well?
