Fleece Smells!

There are pros and cons to the fleece. I have a senior pig so its so much nicer for him to lay on it and is more cost effective. However if I dont change the newspaper and fleece every other day I notice the smell something terrbile. I want to keep using it but I dont think I can handle smelling the dirtyness all the time. I also bought scented puppy pads but that doesnt help either. Do any of you have a problem like this and how do you keep the smell down?

Try using three layers fleece-cotton battting-towels. I find that using newspaper smells alot more than cottong batting.

I agree, try more absorbent layers in different combinations. I'm designing my girls' new liners and they will have four layers (fleece, polyester batting, vellux, and cotton) - not sure what order yet! Then underneath I plan on laying down a few puppy pads and newspaper. Hopefully that will last 3 days or so!

I also like to use something like baking soda underneath the fleece to help control any odors, but I've learned that you should only do this if your piggies can't dig underneath it, because then it just makes a mess and everyone needs a bath.

I use baking soda too and it seems to work really well under the paper and the fleece.

Scented puppy pads seem to attract the pigs into eating them, that was my experience. I now use mattress pads or sheets under the fleece with newspaper on the very bottom and it hasn't been smelling at all.

Thanks guys, I didnt even think about bakin soda. I also doubled up on the fleece to see if that helps. I appericate everyones input.

I like the idea of fleece and am giving it a go....now if I can just get them to pee in the box intsead of everywhere else in the cage.................

lol I know right! I cant get my guys to use a litter box of any sort, they go where ever they feel like it. But my older man is 7 so I dont see the need to try to convince him now

Guess I should have opted for a color other than white for the main floor too. lol Makes it 10 times worse

Kimberly78, doubling up on the fleece will actually only make it smell worse as the urine gets trapped under the first layer. I know from experience. Use something very absorbant under one layer of fleece and it will help. I use newspaper on the bottom, then an old sheet or mattress pad and then one layer of fleece. I haven't tried the following myself because my cages don't smell but you could put a mild smelling fabric softener sheet between the newspaper and whatever you have on top of it, but don't put it directly under the fleece.

I actually thought of doing the fabric sheet in between the newspaper. I asked everyone if they could smell the stink but I seem to be the only one, maybe Im just crazy, ha ha. All set aside I figure I will try the baking soda and what the heck the fabric sheet too. I am looking into crib pads as well but I dont have the money as of yet. Over all I like the look of the fleece and my piggers are oh so happy, so I really want to stick with it. YOu guys are the best and as always everyones input is appericated.
