We currently have a young cavy, Princess, who will be delivering at least two babies confirmed by ultrasound. Any advice and\or instruction would be very much appreciated for the birthing process and care of the babies.

Was she already pregnant when you got her?

Feed lots of alfalfa and good veggies. Try not to handle her much at the end of her pregnancy. Separate the babies by sex at 3 weeks.

how much was an ultrasound at the vets if you dont mind me asking?? i want to go to vets and maybe confirm if my guinea pig actually does have babies there

I think you should ask your vet. Prices vary.

No, she was not pregnant when we got her. We have a male who was neutered.....something must have went wrong! We have yet to confront the vet who performed the procedure. Thanks for the food recommendations. Are alfalfa sprouts you purchase in the grocery store good?

I did not have to pay for the ultrasound, as I work for a physician and a tech volunteered to scan our cavy. Very interesting to see the tiny heart beat....261 bpm! We also saw the spine, head and body. Sometimes it can be hard to scan them due to their thick hair.

I mean alfalfa hay and/or alfalfa pellets. What type of hay are you feeding now? If they're one year old, then they need timothy too or bluegrass/orchard.

Did you wait 2 to 3 weeks to put the neutered male back in? You have to wait for the sperm to die/get out of the system. Are you sure the vet removed both testicles? Sometimes they retract.

Look at (broken link removed) for more information. That's the best source of medical info for cavies on the net, or anywhere for that matter! I hope that everything goes well.

Where did you get them, just asking because of the pregnancy.

They get some dried timothy, but mostly they eat lots of carrots, romaine and apple pieces. They also like fresh parsly very much.

The long version is... we did wait the time as the vet instructed. At the time we didn't have Princess, It was Fluffy (2 1/2 years old) who became pregnant after being reunited with our male Curly. Very sadly, after giving birth to 4 stillborns, she never recovered and died the next day. ( the vet gave her a shot of pitocin and calcium and said she would be ok. We also brought in Curly to be checked and he said the testicals are gone.) Enter princess, who we got about a month before Fluffy passed, came about 3 months after Curly was neutered. I suppose there is a slight, possiblity that Princess was pregnant when we got her, but I highly doubt it. I think her pregnancy is a result of a botched neutering.

That's a sad story. It could be a previous pregnancy, though. Where did you get her? (Fluffy) and where did you just get Princess?

How many days have you had princess?

Thank you for your well wishes. We have checked out that link and are very thankful for it, very informative.

Curly, the male, we rescued. And Princess we got at a local pet shop here in Palm Springs, FL.

In thant case, the female more than likely was pregnant when you got her. Did you have her checked out right away by a vet at all?

Fluffy, from one of the chain pet stores and Princess from a store close to our home.

You really think so?..she was only 5 or 6 weeks old when we got her.

But no, we did not get her checked out by a vet.

Here are pictures of my babies at a few days old. (we bought the mom pregnant also)

If you ever have any questions you can PM me and I will try to help!

Gestation is 59 to 73 days. Six weeks is only 42 days. Sows can mature at 4 weeks of age. She probably came pregnant already, as it is unlikely the boar you have was able to do the deed. Any estimate on the delivery date? I'll bet it comes within 17 days.

Aww, cute! I love the one that's all orange and black.

Sows can get pregnant at 3 weeks old. Males can father babies at the age too.
