Ok so I bought a new male and introduced him to the old male. However my old male has been incessantly trying to mate with the little one. The little one appears traumatized (as I would be too!). Is this a normal display of agression until one of them asserts their "position" in the chain?

Yes, its pretty normal

1. You did not quarantine. When you get a new pig you should quarantine for 3 weeks to assure the new pig is not ill and does not have mites.

2. It sounds as though you just plopped the new pig in the old pigs cage. Doing this results in what you experienced. As you were told on another thread, they should introduce on totally neutral territory. Then clean the cage from top to bottom to remove all scents from the older boar you had. If the neutral territory introduction was successful, then you place both pigs into newly cleaned cage.

3. Please don't "buy" pigs. There are tons of lovely pups and older pigs in shelters waiting for homes.

You older boar is asserting dominance and this will continue until the baby boar submits to the older boar.
