does it look like this? or is it caused by ringworm?omg i am so sad seeing my pigs got this all of sudden [GuineaPigCages.com] does mites infection look like this?[GuineaPigCages.com] does mites infection look like this?

What is that a picture of, exactly? I can see the scab, but is there also hair loss? A strong sign of mites is of course the scratching and biting at oneself, but also a v-shape of hair thinning on the back from where the guinea pig can turn its head around and bite at the mites. It could also be fungal, but I don't have a lot of experience with that. I don't think mites are typically visible, but some types of lice are. Try looking up fungal infections and mite symptoms, there have been countless threads about them on this forum. If they fit, treat for whichever it seems to be, and if you're still unsure, I would take them to their vet :)

Could be mites. It can't hurt them to treat for both mites and fungal infection though. Get hold of some Advantage to treat for mites (ask your vet what kind you should use) and wash your piggies with Nizoral shampoo just in case it's a fungal infection. And put some Betadine on the scabs - it has anti-bacterial properties which will help the scabs heal... It's best to take your pig to a vet the first time this happens though so you know exactly what it is and how to diagnose the symptoms if it ever happens again...

It looks more like bite wound to me. Are your pigs fighting?
Wash the wound with antiseptic solutions.

The pics don't look like mites nor fungal. Here are some info on mites and fungal.

Edit to add:
Just read your older threads. I believe your pigs have been fighting. Separate them if you continue to find scabs or if you see them fight.

You might want to take them to the vet to get them checked out. Sometimes bite wound turns into abscess and will need to be drained and need antibiotics.

Just curious, is Advantage as effective as Revolution for mites? I used to regularly treat mine every few months with Advantage as a preventive measure but someone told me that it's for fleas and not mites. I use Revolution now but Advantage is easier to get.

i talked to an experienced person about the possibility of fungal infection. this man said it's more likely to be mites rather than fungal. most of the time fungal infection is characterized by a black, crusty scar. is that right?
so i can just give them miconazole cream? (in case this turns out to be fungal infection)

yeah they were fighting. so after i got a lot of advises from my older thread, i was quite successful to keep them not fighting anymore :D
i thought it was bite wound too. i began more concerned when i saw there's hair loss on it

yesterday i gave them chloroxylenol and i guess i was hurting them. they were squeaking non-stop for like 5 minutes after that.

edit for another question:
yes, i will absolutely see a vet soon. thanks everyone! :)
another question, there's a topical gel that's recommended to treat mites infection in my place. here are the ingredients:
Gamexane (gama Benzene Hexachloride)/Lindane 1%
Usnic acid 1%

any thoughts on this? is this safe for pigs?

From what I've read, Advantage does not kill mites. It only works on lice and fleas. Revolution works on all, lice, mites and fleas.

On a side note, topical ivermectin works on lice and mites. If ivermectin was given orally or injected, it will not work on lice but will work on mites.

yeah there is hair loss
They can have hair loss from fighting too. Sometimes they pull out each other's hair while biting.

It stings! Can you find something else that won't sting?
Chlorhexidine Gluconate (Nolvassan)
Povidone Iodine (Betadine)

I've never heard of it so did some google search. It's an insecticide and toxic. Please don't use it.

okay i will give them betadine instead and leave the lindane behind.
thanks everyone!

i went to see the vet and he said it was definitely mites. so he injected ivermectin to my pigs. i hope everything's going to be better.

anyway, is it necessary to bath my pigs like 2-3 times per week until their skins and hairs are back to normal?
and how long will it normally take for the hairs to grow back? (in case the treatment doesn't work or so)

Your vet thinks it's mites and not bite wound?

If it's mites, don't bath them. Mites will burrow deeper into their skin and cause discomfort. Ivermectin treatment has to be repeated once a week for three weeks.

yeah he thinks it's mites. here i attach a picture i just took a minute ago.

my vet also suggests me to give them vitamin B and extra vitamin C everyday so that their hairs can grow back to normal faster. is that necessary?
i am skeptical because after all he's not a cavy savvy (there is no cavy savvy in my place, yes, not even one). this vet i went to is just famous for having treated a lot of guinea pigs.

I still think it might be fungal. When pigs have mites, they usually have a V-shaped hair loss down their backs, because it's where they can reach with their teeth. Spots like that are less common with mites, because they tend to spread all over the pig pretty quickly.

But since the vet has treated the pig with ivermectin, it won't hurt for you to keep on with the fungal treatment. Just don't bathe the pig. Get some Monistat or Lotrimin and put a thin film on with a q-tip. If it's in an area where the pig can reach, be sure to rub it in well.
