I was just wondering if anyone had pictures so that i can see what it looks like... the whole fleece idea sounds pretty darn good... im using hemp bedding right now and miss piggy doesnt seem to mind it... it just gets every where though

Do you sew them all together?

yes I liked how it turned out better with hands than machine. It was more aesthetically pleasing. I tried layering fleece on newspapers but my piggies knocked it all around I deffinatly like the cage liners better

I will definatly try that out.. I have some old fleece throws that are just laying around (my family is really big on blankets) and who doesnt have old towels available... and I think i might even have some batting left from my high school days... ill have to check... but yeah thanks for the info!

If you look in my gallery, you will see the fleece in my cage.

I think I'm going to fleece&towels on all of my cages. Is there any place where fleece is really cheap, and I mean REALLY cheap?

You could go to fabric store. At walmart the have rack towards the back of the sewing section with materials under 3 dollars a yard. But there isn't always what you want. It is usually 3 or 4 doolars for a yard of fleece, unless you buy blankets... I havent done that.

I have seen fleece on clearance at Wal-mart. I have looked at Jo-Ann Fabric stores and the cheapest I have seen them is 7.99 a yard. Fleece blankets are not that cheap. See if anyone you know have any old fleece blankets around they dont want.

Another place to find cheap fleece is at a second hand store... buy old fleece jackets sweaters, pants... you could make like a quilted type pattern for your piggies... oh! i know some of the dollar stores have fleece blankets for a few bucks!

Wal-Mart has fleece for 2.74 a yard. They also have fleece blanket kits that you get 2 panels in it, one solid and one patterned, measuring 48"x60" (fits a 3x4 nicely) for 10.74 in the fabric department. You can also find 50"x60" fleece blankets at Wal-Mart for $5 each. Jo-Ann fabrics and other places I have looked at online seem high in price compared to WMart.

the more i read about fleece in cages, the more i am swayed toward that option for a bedding..it sounds comfortable, and i can imagine, a heck of a lot less messy then shavings.

Joann's Fabircs is having a huge sale now (atleast the one by me is)...so I got some pink fleece for like $2 a yard.

I bought my fleece blankets at Sav-On. There was enough there to make one liner for a 2x4 cage and for the 1x2 loft. I paid $3 each.

If you llok in my gallery, I have two different one. The rainbow one is sewn together. THat is for my old cage. The lt blue in the 2x4 cage has not yet been sewn together.

How do you have to wash the fleece? Also, with the cage liners, where would you find them, you put those on bottom right? Sorry it probably sounds like a pretty dumb question, but I just want to make sure. I am tired of shavings, they are too expensive and too hard to clean up, especially with a big cage.

I am not sure if you meant that for me, but I wash them like you would any blanket. I use warm to hot water with a gentle detergent. I put them in the dryer because it gets a lot og the hair off. I refer to the the fleece that I have sewn to the towels as cage liners. Basically, I use a layer of fleece, a layer of towels, and another layer of fleece. The bottom layer is to protect the coro.

A lot of us use fleece because it saves money in the long run and in my opinion is healthier for the piggies because they don't get shavings stuck to them with fleece and there is a risk that some pigs have allergies to the different types of shavings. I use it mostly because it's cost efficient and easy to clean up. I spend less than $4 a month to wash vs. $20-40 a month buying carefresh or aspen.

You just have to make sure you have enough fleece for several cage changes. It costs more at the beginning buying fleece yes, but in a years time the investment of buying a few yards of fleece or some fleece blankets will save hundreds compared to buying all those shavings/carefresh/wood pellets/etc.

Thanks, for the help. How often do you have to wash them. Daily, once every two days, etc.

I have 4 sows and I have to change the fleece out about every 3-4 days.

That's not bad! I think I am changing to fleece, for good!
