How Much do you spend on veggies a week? How many pigs do you have?

Here's mine:

10-14$ a week for bell peppers (usually 3 green 3 yellow, or 3 green 2 yellow 1 red)

5-10$ a week for lettuce, (2 green 2 red 1 romaine/boston/endive or 3 green 2 red, unless they are fresh good big heads, then only 2 green 2 red)

8-10$ a week for herbs (3-4 cilantro, 1 curly parsley (sometimes), 1 dill,)

15$ a week for other items (cucumbers, carrots, kale/dandelion, cherry tomatos, fruit, etc)

soo, about 40-50 bucks a week, I also live in canada, I have 4 piglets,

Wow, that's a lot. I have six pigs and I usually buy 2 bunches of lettuce at $1.58 each, a cucumber or maybe two that are about 60 cents each, a bunch of parsley at 50 cents, 2 bunches of cilantro at 28 cents each, a bag of carrots for a dollar or so and maybe a dollar or two more for miscellaneous other things. I also have 2 dogs and a cat and I don't think I spend as much as you on all 9 animals.

2 heads of lettuce? How long does that last?

Between lettus, parsley, cilantro, dill, cucumber, and carrots, and apples(also for my kids) I probably spend between $60 a month but weekly would be like $10 to $20 depending on if I need everything. My piggies don't like peppers or tomatoes

It really varies depending how much each veggie is per pound. The price of veggies have really gone up here with the drought we're under.

I shopped at a mega produce store yesterday that usually has the lowest prices and paid $3.42 for green leaf lettuce at $1.79/lb, a 1lb bag of carrots for .89. romaine $1.83 at .54 lb, radicchio $1.34 at $2.49/lb and 2 bunches of cilantro for .50. Lettuce has been expensive.

I went to Meijers today and paid .97 for red leaf lettuce at .99/lb, $1.77 for green leaf lettuce at .99/lb and $2.42 for a radicchio at $2.99/lb.

I'm not sure how long it will last with 7 pigs. We've had no a/c for the third span of time this month. A storm knocked out our power for three days earlier this month, our a/c was out for two days last week and was repaired. It started smoking on Monday and died. We're getting a new one (they credited us for the repairs) but it won't be installed until Friday. The pigs are back our lower level which is cool. It's unbearable on our main level with the temp of 100 outdoors. My kids and I spent a good part of the day at the public pool. I stocked up on lots of different veggies to keep the pigs happy. We have a finished sub-basement with ceramic floor so it's fine for the pigs. It's just a pain setting up temporary cages down there since the coroplast cages are too big to carry downstairs.

Wow! they dont like tomatoes? Mine love them! especially one of them she could prolly eat 5 million of them in one serving! How do you get vitamin c into the pigs, if they dont have peppers?

They refuse to eat the peppers and the tomatoes. I put them in their cage and the peppers and tomatoes just sit there until they get all wrinkly. I don't know what else to give them. I never actually thought about that is something that they had to have. The veggies I give them have vitamin c in them so I'm pretty sure they get enough of vitamin c

All of the grocery stores sell small amounts of packaged lettuce but it's more expensive than buying the lettuce by pound. It's stacked like fruit. Escarole, endive, romaine and most other veggies are sold by pound. The grocery stores around here have huge produce sections.

mommmyof2 - from what i've read, most pigs are fussy!! i have 7 and some won't eat this, some won't eat that - i hate wasting food, so it try not to give them stuff they refuse to eat. i used to worry more about their C intake than i do now. i use KMS pellets and i've been told they have a good enough amount of C in them. those pellets are ALWAYS gobbled up by my boys!!

I have 4 piggies and none of them will eat peppers or tomatoes. I also feed them kms pellets and sweet meadow hay. All my piggies eat the kms pellets like it's their last meal. And when they hear me with the bag they wheek like crazy, especially my 2 pregnant sows.

I spend $30-$40 on veggies for 4 guinea pigs and a 5 pound rabbit. Maybe more in the winter and maybe less in the summer. Lettuce is around $1.50 a head. I get packs of artisan lettuce which is 4 mini heads for $2. Cilantro and parsley are around $.80 a bundle. At the farmers market I can get large bundles of cilanto, parsley, mint, dill and basil for $1 each. Bell peppers are around $.60 each. A pack of tomatoes is around $1.60. A 3 pack of zucchini is also around $1.60. Green beans are around $1.70 a pound. Cucumbers are around $80 each. They get raspberry leaves, dandelion and clover for free in the summer. They get other things but Im not going to go over everything ;)

2 bunches of lettuce normally last a week although the ones I got this past weekend were a little smaller than usual so I needed a third.

I need about 4 bell peppers to get me through a week. Half a pepper a day between the two pigs. That is about $8.

Usually I need a head of Red Leaf Lettuce and a bundle of Cilantro. 2 dollars there.

And of course some weeks I need to spend extra on things like Tomatoes, Radicchio, Zucchini, Strawberries. So add about an average of 5 dollars each week.

So right about $15 a week to feed 2 adult Female Piggies.

$50 seems a bit steep........... I bet you can cut some costs somehow.

I meant to say $.80. If they were that price they wouldn't get cucumbers.

Sounds right to me. 2 bundles of Lettuce usually have 40 leaves, assume they are feeding 1 leaf a day per pig. That's 6 leaves each day, 6 x 7 is 42.

I try, but.. In Canada its quite expensive, not the lettuce or herbs, its the bell peppers, they are any where from 1.50-2.99 a lb for green, and 2.99-3.99 for yellow, red or orange. I also give a nice variety so, its expensive,
