So right now I have my cavy Xander in a 1.5x3ft aquarium style tank. I've been doing some digging into getting him a new, larger, habitat, and have come across a few possibilities (I found an 8sqft cage within my price range yay). The only problem is, it looks like a lot of cavy cages do not come with covers for them. Right now I have a wire mesh cover on his tank. Does the habitat need a cover? Will he make an escape attempt if there isn't a cover? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Cages do not need covers.
He may want to secape, you need to escape proof the cage, make sure the walls are tall so he can't jump out.

I recomend getting a cover if you have animals or young children that can harm the pigs.

haha The only "animal or young child" in my house is my 17 year old brother.
Thank you :)

hahaha!! I have my ownwild animals too!! My brother and his bestfriend!!

Go_ellie, you shouldn't make a blanket statement that cages don't need covers. Some pigs are climbers, and will escape any cage they can get out of.

If there are small children or animals around that can get in the cage, you not only need a lid, you need a way to clamp or lock it down so nothing can get in. If your pigs are climbers, ditto.

If they don't climb and there's no danger from other children or animals, then no, they don't need a lid.

oh, @bpatters, I am just so sorry!!

This is a forum and people make mistakes. My pigs don't climb, so how would I know how to take care of a climbing pig- I wouldn't!! I am disgusted how rude some moderaters are here!!

I'm sorry, it was a blanket statement, but people need to calm down- even the moderators.

Go_ellie, one of the purposes of the moderators is to make sure that people aren't getting incorrect advice on this forum.

If you'd said "I don't think cages need covers," that would have been fine. But we have a lot of young posters here, even younger than you are, and they don't have any way of knowing whether advice is correct or not unless someone points out the errors.

Until fairly recently, all new members were put on a moderated status so their posts could be read. Nothing went on the forum until it had been approved by a mod. Your statement about "no covers needed" wouldn't have gotten posted at all.

With your forum membership comes a responsibility to be sure you're as accurate as possible in posting advice to other people. When you don't know something for sure, state that clearly so other people won't take it as accepted or recommended practice.

I just wanted to add that another time when a lid is absolutely necessary is when one or more unaltered boars are living in the viscinity of unaltered sows. Many have witnessed the acrobatics that boars will perform to get to sows, including climbing up, down, and around multiple grid lengths.

For what it's worth, I thought Bpatters responded quite nicely, without the slightest hint of condescension. Thanks for moderating and making sure that we all get the proper information... I know I constantly am looking to your advice.
