well i have tried just about every water bottle known to man and pigs and they all leak. and since i am gone most of the day, the bottles are always empty when i get home.
(the only one that doesnt leak is the blue one from petsmart but since the spring in the tube is so strong, the pigs have a tough time drinking out of it.)

so i was thinking about trying to make my own out of a 2 liter soda bottle (with a top from a regular water bottle) i know it will still leak but hopefully there will be enough water to last until i get home. the boys especially need it. there are 4 of them in a 4x4 that i keep outside on my balcony (its covered so they are always in the shade) but it has been getting ridiculously hot lately. (usually i fill the bottles half full with ice cubes or completely freeze one of the bottles overnight so it will melt and hopefully last longer throughout the day.)

has anyone tried a diy bottle?
i just need to find a top that will fit a soda bottle because none of mine do.

I have never made my own water bottles, but could you not put in two or even three large water bottles? That would last longer. But maybe if you do that there will be several soggy spots as opposed to just one. If that's a problem, you could just put a brick (very absorbent, good for their nails) under the bottles to catch the drips.

I don't know if this is right or not, but this is what I finally did. I first posted on here and tried different bottles from different stores, etc. I dealt with the empty bottles, wondered how long they had been out of water before I had the chance to refill them, the drips, etc. Then I was faced with going on a family vacation but yet having piggies to take care of. So.......I ran to Walmart and bought one of those 3 gallon automatic waterers for cats. It's just a big rectangular container with a blue tray on the bottom and holds 3 gallons of water. I hired someone to come in and check on the animals too every few days. It works wonderfully. I do have it on the second level so the shavings don't get in and the pig food and hay are on the opposite corners. Works out nicely. Every now and then I do get a food pellet dropped in the water, but........

I've never tried to do a diy bottle. And I've only leaked when the bottle fell on the floor and cracked. But I agree with Chiapet, I'd add a few more bottles, maybe bigger rabbit ones or something!
