Hello everyone, I have owned my trio of guinea pigs for 8 months,s and I built their habitat and then did some improvement on it so I would like to share some info with the folks who like to do the same.
I initially built two 2x4 feet cages with ripped 2x4 lumber, mdf sheet, acrylic panel and wire mesh(as side). They are at different heights so the smaller one can go either side by side, or underneath the bigger one to create a muti level experience for the gps. I had sheet vinyl flooring cut to glue on top of the mdf platform, and dish mat on top of that, and finally a fleece sheet on the surface.
Later I found the fleece is not necessary, because the dish mat has a good surface to separate water contained in the sponge core. Also, the high-low setup was not easy for vacuuming the droppings, so I made them level. I also cut large sections out on the mdf layer and covered the opening with more wire mesh, so the urine contained in dish mats has a better chance to dry out.
I also moved all hay and pellet into a plastic bin so it is easier to clean up, and I also built a hay box for them to eat without wasting too much.
Attached are some pics. Also some youtube video I shot regarding guinea pig cages.
Hope this helps someone wanting to build the same for their guinea pigs.
