Hi everyone! I’m new here :)

I had 3 pairs of piggies as a young girl, but I’m much older now and my son and I have just adopted a pair of baby piggies.

We didn’t realise that the piggies were only a month old until we went to pick them up! It is my understanding that their mother had already been adopted by the time we went to pick them up.

The youngest pig I had in the past was about 4 months old. I’m just wondering if there’s anything we need to be mindful of in terms of baby piggie diet (eg best type of hay / pellets / fresh foods to include/avoid etc?)

Unlimited alfalfa pellets until they're six months old, then switch to no more than two tablespoons of timothy pellets per day. Lots of good quality hay. Non-sugary veggies. Bell pepper is great for getting vitamin C into them. Look in the food and diet forums for more info.

At such a young age it can be hard to tell, but double check that you have both boys or girls, but not one of each.

For a 1-month-old guinea pig, a proper diet is essential to ensure they grow up healthy and strong. At this age, their diet should primarily consist of alfalfa hay, which provides the necessary calcium and protein for their growing bodies. As they get older, you can gradually transition them to timothy hay, which is more suitable for adult guinea pigs.

Look for pellets specifically formulated for young guinea pigs, which often contain more nutrients suited for their development. Introduce small amounts of fresh vegetables, such as leafy greens like romaine lettuce, kale, and spinach, as well as bell peppers. Be sure to avoid vegetables that are high in oxalates or those that can cause gas, like cabbage or broccoli.
