DH said something disturbing to me today..

i WAS talking to him about how we need to get timothy hay, and how tomorrow I have to go about 45 minutes away to go to the pet store, to get oxbow that they had to ORDER, and He said "I woudn't have gotten them if I knew they had to have premium everything..." meaning the best of the best, and not just walmart food, and grass and veggies.. Id ont know how to take this.. I wasn't sure wether to put this in general or cavy, but because it is related to doing what is best for the pigs, I figured this would be ok.

is dh your husband or dad. Look in the phone book for feed store maybe there is one thats not far from you. I only Paid 11.75 for a 50lbs bag of food and they are just as good as oxbow.

I've been there too. Just make an effort to shop around and try to get the best deals (and let him see you doing this->*important*). Also explain to him that the bag of pellets and hay will last a looong time (months). And remind him that the cost of feeding the pigs is nothing compared to the other bills (rent, mortgage, and utility bills) and that you being happy is priceless.

One more thing...I've found that just buying things and putting them away quietly (rather than discussing them and later showing up with bags and bags of things, then he starts calculating how many hours he has to work to pay for it etc.) is the best way to a peaceful household.

We don't buy "premium" anything for our cavies. They do just fine on farm bales of Timothy hay and fresh vegetables from the grocery store and during the summer, they mostly get grass, dandelion, clover and hay.

you are better off buying bulk. Its cheaper and longer to use. I got 2 50lbs bags of pellets from a feed store for 25.00 dollars.It will last me at leats 2 months with 20 piggies. If you only have 2 for a 50lbs should last you at least 3 months or so.

thanks everyone! I think he's doing ok.. especially that HIS pig got sick today, and I'm 'nursing' him, to keep him healthy until tomorrows vet visit.
