So, I have had Charlie for over a month.
For those who do not know the story -
I met a lady in the pet aisle at Wal Mart and when I saw she was buying guinea pig food, I struck up a conversation about pigs. Turns out she had one that she really wanted to get rid of. I went to her house a few times and met him (he did not have a name- they called him guinea pig).
After a couple of visits I decided to get him. He was such a sweet boy and his current situation was not good. I already have 2 boys, George and Patch.
So, I paid her $10 and took Charlie straight to the vet. Turns out he had some lice exposure (vet found some eggs). He has since had 3 treatments and has been cleared.
The only other issue I have had with him is his poos. They have been soft since I have had him and his previous owner could not really give me any real info about his condition prior to me getting him. The vet checked him for parasites and none were found. She thought he just needed to get used to his new food and eating veggies (previous owner only gave him what the was eating at the pet store she got him from).
But it has been close to 7 weeks and his poos are still soft. His appetite for veggies is amazing. He loves his red leaf lettuce, spinach, carrots, cilantro, wheat grass. I'm still working on him and his hay intake. He does not eat it nearly as well as Patch and George. I am still transitioning him to eating anything other than the "buy in bulk" pellets from the pet store. That is what his previous owner was feeding him (or so she said). So, I have been mixing it with the Sweet Meadow timothy pellets.
I am constantly having to clean soft poos out of his hair. I have moved his cage into the same room as George and Patch. He is active. He wheeks for his veggies and when he hears me open the pellet container or bag of hay. I don't know if he does it because he wants some or because he hears the George and Patch carrying on.
I so want him to be in with George and Patch. He deserves companionship and I hate to think he is lonely. His previous owner had indicated that he was in a cage alone but I since found out she had him in with a bunny! I am suspicious that she was feeding him rabbit food.
Until he has regular poos he will have to stay in a cage alone. I cannot risk something being wrong that the vet missed and Charlie getting George and Patch sick. And I can't have Charlie soft poos stuck to the other boys either.
He is such a sweet boy. Loves to cuddle. Never fussy.
I hope he improves soon.
I am still changing my clothes and washing my hands and arms after handling him. I keep all their food and supplies separate. This is exhausting! When will he have regular poos??
