My foster pig delivered her babies earlier today. Everything went fine and she has 4 healthy babies. She had no problems before she had them. Three hours after the birth I went to check on her and she had a bald patch on her side. It's about the size of 3 quarters. How would that have happened so quick? She didn't have any itching or hair loss before the birth.

I believe it is not uncommon for moms to be to suffer hair loss. Usually it's on their abdomen and back legs but I guess it is possible it could be anywhere.

Could it be that the babies have been barbering her?

Hair loss on the sides is characteristic of hormonal issues, and this can often happen after a pregnancy. Hopefully it should clear up when the babies are weaned, but if it goes on contact your vet.

You know now that I look at her she is missing hair on her legs. The hair loss has become worse though. When I left this morning it was just on the side. When I got home this evening she now has a big bald spot on her upper back. So, I should expect this to get better when she weans? Is she going to lose all her hair?

Possibly, but if it's getting worse then you might want to contact your vet as they are the ones more qualified to answer!

This has happened to my girl through her last 2 birth (I didn't have her then). When I got her she was completely bald from the neck down. She was actually barbering herself and she only stopped doing it about 3 months after the birth of her last litter. I am not sure if this is what your piggy is doing, but I wanted to asure you that if it is barbering, it will more than likely stop on its own or will decrease in its seriousness. My girl still barbers her leg, but she no longer goes after her back, hips, or stomach.

I'd say if there is no hair at all in some places, she has just lost it because she has had babies, one of my sows got this after her litter of 2. If the babies chewed it, the hair wouldn't be completely gone, her hair would just be uneven. From my experience the babies don't start chewing their mother's hair till they are about two weeks old. - I really doubt newborns would barber their mothers hair.

Yes, I think she should be alright- my girl was like that too when she gave birth a couple hours later.
