Snowball started to cough around 10minutes ago. He was running around in the hallway a while before. The first cough was when he was drinking water so I thought it's the same as when we cough from drinking water too fast. But the coughing became a bit more frequent. He isn't coughing constantly right now but he never coughed before. So I'm kind of scared. Other than the coughing he's acting normal as usual. My dad keeps telling me that its nothing. So I doubt he'll drive us to the emergency clinic just from a few coughs. Is there anything I can do to treat this?

Maybe you should take him in to the vet. I have had pigs going on 5 years and have never heard mine cough, they have sneezed but never coughed so it may be worth having him checked out for peace of mind or maybe it could be something that requires treatment. Hope things go well. :)

the vet that's in today doesn't treat guinea pigs. but I do already have an appointment for tomorrow. Could it be because he chocked on water a bit?

Maybe it was because he drank water to fast, but it wouldn't hurt to see the vet if you're worried.

Yeah, the appointment is already set. It did surprise me that the receptionist told me its going to be $60 for the exam. I always thought its around $40 for a checkup. Will it be more expensive if I asked if the vet can check for fleas also?

My piggy coughs a bit of the water bottle let the water out too fast. Also if you are providing proper vitamin C your little piggy is probably fine. I almost ALWAYS have eucalyptus on an oil diffuser burning in my room which is for opening up airways. I use it for my asthma.... so I know shes not going to develop pneumonia (I had 2 piggies die from pneumonia when they got older) Make sure you let us know how your piggy is doing. I hope everything is okay.

How many coughs does your piggy do when that happens? Mine did a couple with around 30 seconds in between right after drinking water. And then a around 3 more with a minute or two in between. And then one more i think, 5 minutes later. I'm not giving him any vitamin drops though.

I didnt mean Vitamin C drops. I just meant Vitamin C in general. I was told before that piggies having the proper vitamin stores makes them less likely to getting pneumonia and other chest infection problems... also, obivously scurvy,

I wasnt talking about Vitamin C drops I was just talking about vitamin C in general in their diet. A vetrian once told me that providing your piggie with adequate C stores lessened their chances of getting viruses and pneumonia.

My piggy coughs when he wheeks too hard or when hes eating his hay. I asked the vet if anything was wrong and checked him out and she asured me it was natural for it to happen just as we cough sometimes for no reason. She just told me to make sure I dont hear any other noises with it such as stuffy or conjested in the chest.

One of my three coughs when he drinks too fast, and usually when he first wakes up. I figure if its normal for them to sneeze, coughing a little must be ok. good luck at the vets.
