I'm just wondering how much a typical "check-up" or first time visit to the vet is. I know it will vary depending on where you go, but it'd be nice to have an idea. I'm going to be taking my two girls in (I've had the first for a month and a half and the second for about three weeks.) They've never been to the vet before, and I'd like them to get checked out. Also, I mentioned this in another thread, my newer guinea pig, Sugar, has been coughing/sneezing/maybe hiccupping? This started yesterday after I introduced her to Cubie (older pig), and put them in the newly cleaned cage together. I heard they can sniff too much and get hay in their nose and this could cause extra sneezes/coughs? I've researched the symptoms or a URI and this seems to be some of them. Being a relatively new piggy mom, I'm worried.

P.s. Sorry mods if this is in the wrong forum, I thought here would be best. And sorry if the prefix doesn't really fit, it was the best choice.

When Twix went for a check-up, they charged 38 bucks. The price really varies. Some doctors take more than $50! The doctor checked her weight, breathing, heart beat, eyes, and ears, just so you know what goes on when they check them. I'm not sure about the coughing thing. I wish you and your piggies well!

Wow, 38 isn't bad. Hopefully the exotic vet here is reasonable! Thanks.

My personal vet costs $38 for a regular check up. Anything else done is obviously extra. My mother's vet (who I had to take them to over winter break) costs $58 for a regular check up, anything else done was extra.

What I did in selecting my personal vet (which I did before I even had pigs) was "shop" around for one. I called numerous places checking the prices. When I found places that I could afford with my number of pigs, I narrowed it down to the most knowledgeable one. I got lucky, he's extremely cavy savvy and within my budget.

When I had my pig checked out when she had an eye infection it cost me $49 including the eye drops and he did a regular exam on her as well. He's the only vet in my area that I trust. Though there are only two exotic vets around here.

Wow, 38 bucks! I'm so jealous. My vet charges $65 for a check-up (not including medications). $95 for urgent care (after hours)

PeggySu, where did you take them. I'm around the San Fernando Valley or Santa Clarita Valley area.

I paid $45 yesterday for a regular scheduled visit with a complete exam. We were in there a good half hour. This is Central MA in an lower income urban area. I thought this was cheap as my dog vet visits (different vet) were always at leat 65-75.

When I was looking for a vet to treat my piggie's lice, the exam/office charge ranged from $34-$37. Honestly, I thought this was expensive because my husband took his cat to his vet and the office charge was only $20.

Thanks for all your replies! I'm gonna call the exotics vet I was planning on going to, and if that's no good, I'll check out some others and see who's best skilled/priced.
