I am just getting my third and fourth piggies next weekend. I want to make sure they are getting the vitamin C they need. Anyone use chewable vitamin C? Where did you get it?

I always wondered if pure vitamin c chewable tablets are the same for animals as they are for people. I always have a supply of 250mg vitamin c tablets for myself and it would be a lot easier for me to be able to give them those rather then buy some over the internet (we don't have any around here). Anyone have any ideas on this?? Isn't vitamin c just vitamin c no matter where you get it??

You can give them people vit. c I believe.

The vitamin C you have is perfectly fine to use. Just give about 1/5 of a tablet.

I use a chewable vitamin C from Rite Aid. It was about $6.50 for 500mg, quantity 100 tablets. Since I have 2 piggies, I know to quarter the tablets -giving each GP about 75mg each. Personally I crush the tablets and sprinkle it over the pellets but everyone has a different method.

I was told by the experts over at GL that if you want to supplement pigs with Vitamin C that they only need 50mg per day.

Kat, if your only quartering your 500mg tablets, your pigs are getting 125mg C instead of the 75mg you stated.

I have had a formula that my vet gave me when I was getting my two boars treated for mites (because, at the time, I was stupid--let's leave it at that for now). She said to use a 250 mg tablet of pure vitamin c (no colors, preservatives, additives, or other vitamins). Crush a tablet, then mix it with 8 cc of water. Feed one cc of the mixture per cavy per day as needed. That is 31.25 mg of vitamin C in the supplement. I sprinkle this over their veggies whenever they are sick, to make sure that they are receiving the proper nutrients and to speed the ealing process. I usually make half of a mixture (4 cc water + 1/2 of a 250 mg tablet) so that the vitamin c will not degrade so much in the water over one day, as I have two cavies.

Thanks Ly, but the 125 is between 2 piggies.
Is this still OK?
