i got a lead for my guinea pig Charlie about 2 weeks after i got him i put it on him and he was fine he liked it but last week i put it on him and he went crazy like i was hurting him but i never put it on tight and i took it off coz he was squealing like little pigs do and i was stroaking him and it was everytime i touched a certain part of his back he would squeal so i put him back and the next day he was fine what is wrong is it the lead or just leads all together coz i wanna take him out side in the summer?

what can i do?:)

Guinea pigs are not like dogs, and should never be put on leashes. Their backs are very fragile, and do not bend like dogs backs do. They are not social animals, and do not enjoy being around other animals or people.

Also, they should not be allowed outside except possibly in your yard if the grass has not been treated with pesticide or fertilizer. If they are allowed in other places, they may eat grass that has been treated with things that are poisonous to them, or may pick up bordatella which can kill them.

If you want to take your guinea pig out in the summer make him a play pen with grids ziptied together, if you take your pig out in a pen make sure you are there 100% of the time, even with a lid some predators are smart enough to get into a pen. The leashes are very bad for their backs because the spine is not as flexible as say a ferret, or a dog. even though it is marketed to pigs, some stuff that's marketed to pigs is very bad for them. if he is squealing when you touch a certain part of his back now I might take him to the vet just to be 100% sure that nothing happened to the back.

thanks guys lol i dont put it on him no more anyway but i just wanted to check and his back is fine now it was just that one day thanks for the info x :)
