How are you supposed to pronouce cavy?

its a short A sound like in bath, i think

I always pronounced it ca-vee, but apparently its cay-vee

There's been alot of debate going on about this at my house.I always pronounced it as cay-vee also, but then I was led to believe it was pronounced as ca-vee.

what about cav-ay? I always said ca-vee but I think cav-ay sounds way cooler lol :)

I say cay-vee, as in rhyming with navy.

I always pronounced it ca-vee. But it turns out I was wrong. Treen is right. It is pronounced in the same way as the word navy. Take a look:

na·vy (broken link removed) ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nv)
n. pl. na·vies
 1. All of a nation's warships.
 2. often Navy A nation's entire military organization for sea warfare and defense, including vessels, personnel, and shore establishments.
 3. A group of ships; a fleet.
 4. Navy blue.

I notice that the use of the word cavy is correct, but is a generalisation which includes rodents other than guinea pigs.

I always thought it was ca-vee too. But this is because in Dutch, they pronounce it ca-via. So I just assumed the A sound was the same in English. I didn't even know they were called "cavy" until I got my first one. Until then I thought their proper name in English was guinea pig.

It's cay-vee, I'm sure. I looked it up on multiple sites. =)

Oh, and their proper name is cavy, not neccessarily a guinea pig. That's just a nickname.

yeah it sounds like the word "cave" with the "e" sound in "bee" follwing it. cave-e.

Yup,You pronounce it as Cay-vee. I'm definetly sure now,I've seen it pronounced that way many times in many books. It's definetly pronounced as Cay-vee,not any other way.

Tina, I like! It does sound better than cay-vee. Oh well, I'm just going to stick with cav-ee

ya me too, just thought id share that
