cavy travel dilemma

i love to travel so i usually go on vacation once every year for three to four weeks. It is always overseas, so i can't take any pets with me. I'm thinking of getting two guinea pigs, so i'm wondering if this will be an issue. There will be someone to feed them, change their litter, and let them out for a run, but not really anyone to hold and cuddle them. Is this a problem, or can the guinea pigs keep company with each other. Please help my situation, because i definately want a pair of guinea pigs.

Also, do cavies like long road trips?

Any info or insight would be really helpful. Thanks!

As long as they're getting fed, watered, cleaned out, exercised and checked over for illness etc, that's fine while you're on holiday. They will have each other for company, so they will be fine with less cuddles for a few weeks.

Guinea pigs don't make the best travellers - they do get stressed and will suffer with the heat in the car. I'd avoid long trips unless they are essential. If you're going away and it's a long journey, it's better to leave them with someone, or to get someone to go and attend to them at your home rather than taking them with you.

Thanks a bunch, treen. You just made my day ten times better. Now i don't feel so guilty about my yearly family trips.

Any others who have info to share on the subject, opinions still welcome!

We had a couple of pigs come with us on vacation since we were medicating them. They were stressed out by the 1,200 mile (each way) trip, but made it through alright.

We drove from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Pittsburgh, PA. We also drive to NYC every year, so it's two one-week vacations a year. The pigs staying home have a pet sitter.

I know several people who take their rodents (rats, gp's etc) on vacation with them. I've taken ours on weekend trips as well. However, if your trips are overseas, you probably can't do that because of quarantine regulations, etc. We also have a dog and two cats in addition to our two piggies. For long trips we get a pet sitter who comes in twice a day. She charges $15 per day, which is far cheaper than boarding plus the animals all get to be comfy in their home.
