So, I got my cavy, Penny a few weeks ago at school (I'm a college student!). I came home last night, with my hamster and Penny of course. At home, we have two dogs (beagle and foxhound) and two calico cats. I set her cage on top of the fireplace ledge, and Cheyenne (beagle puppy) went up sniffing, her tail wagging every which way. Penny came out of her cage and sniffed Cheyenne through the cage, it was cute!
So for playtime, I have a vinyl shower curtain, put down newspapers, and made a pen out of cardboard (since i still dont have cubes). I had to put Cheyenne up because she is waaaay too exciteable and I don't trust her one bit - she would probably mistake Penny for a warm, squeaky toy that moves by itself.
Anyway, while she was in her pen, Sam (our older calico) just laid down on the couch and watched her. Our other calico, Kylie, was much more curious. She heard her squeaking through the carboard, peeking over and Penny was moving around under a magazine.
So naturally, Kylie proceeded to jump in and sniff the magazine. Penny then sees Kylie, runs towards her, and Ky just about had a heart attack and jumped out. My mom and I were dying of laughter at this point, and it happened a few more times. Ky jumped in, right next to Penny, realized how close she was, then jumped out. One time she sat in the corner for a few minutes as Penny was munching her hay. Then Penny looked over, realized she was there, and ran towards Ky so she jumped out again!
Penny is fearless!! I told her its a good thing she isn't in the wild. "A hawk? What's that? Let me say hi to it!".
(On a side note, so no one gets mad, I let the hamster crawl on Kylie, she's harmless so I knew she wouldn't hurt Penny! Also, she's not much bigger than Penny, she was the runt of the litter!)
