Is oxbow the only food and hay company that is really considered 'exceptional'? I live in northern Illinois, and, as you can probably imagine, shipping charges from Nebraska is very expensive. I can't affor it. I'm going to move my piggie off of his old food, as it had seeds and treats in it, but what food do you suggest, especially if you are near Chicago? Are there any exceptional brands out there? And also, when I do change their diet, should I introduce him to the food slowly? What should I do?

Go to www.critterstore.com and go to Guinea pigs food. They have guinea pig food there, kinda of expensive(Oxbow) but shipping is free for orders $25.00 and more! Also, go under rabbits and they have Oxbow hay too. It's great! :)

Yes, it is the only food that passes through everything. I wish there were more, but that's just the way it is. When you change, change slowly by mixing in a small amount, like an 8:1 ratio, gradually going for an equal amount, then slowly take out the old stuff. You can get food near you, too, just ask around. Some vets even carry it.

you may want to check some feed stores in your area as well. that is the only place where i am that sells oxbow.

I actually checked the store where I'm planning on getting my next piggy in about two and a half weeks, and they carried both cavy cuisine and oxbow hay. Also, another question, when I get my new pig(I've tried adoptions, but there are none less than an hour and a half away from me, and I can't drive yet, soo...I asked my mom's friends store and one of their sows is expecting a litter soon.) he'll be about two or three weeks old, and I'm supposed to give him alfalfa based pellets and hay, after the quarantine is over, how do I keep my older pig from eating it? Should I just handfeed the younger pig his hay?

I hate to have to do this, but bump!

Lol, Doc! Is bumping so that your thread is read? Lol, I never understood that, haha. Um, You should probably give free choice alfalfa, but not so much as everyday. Probably take the younger one out everyday and hand feed, and then put alfalfa all day in the cage once a week, I guess. Sorry, I'm not much of a help, but I have problems with this too! >.<

That's okay! Thanks! I think bump stands for 'bump up my post.' I'm not sure though.

Kleenmama's hay rocks. The feed store hay around here is pretty good too. They have their own pellets. They're not too bad.
