I took my sons guinea pig to the vet because he has a tumer close by the nipple area. The vet said he was sure it was cancer but on the wall of muscle. My question is when we remove it will he chew on that area. I ask because when we had a hamster that had tumors he would chew on the area and passed from infection. Any advice would be helpful. This is our first guinea pig and he will be 4 in august. He is still very active so we want to remove it as soon as possible.

I'm sorry that I cannot answer your question. I don't *think* that guinea pigs would chew the wound. He may clean it but there might be things you could do. Guinealynx.info is more medical than here you might want to try posting there as many people there I think would know the answer...

Sounds like a mammary tumor. They aren't always malignant, so there's a chance it's not actually cancer. In any case it needs to be removed. The vet will suture it shut afterwards. Some pigs remove their own stitches, but most leave the area alone.

I just wanted to say that I am sorry for this issue with your son's piggie. I really hope that he leaves his wound/stitches alone. Please take him to the vet to get it diagnosed by a cavvy savvy "exotics" vet. Exotics ( just in case you don't know) means that a vet specializes in the treatment and extensive experience of small animals.

Don't make the mistake, ( unless you don't have decent access) that many people have unintentionally made, by taking his piggie to any old vet. This site http:// guinealynx.com, is a good place to read about anything medically related, and there is a page, that gives one a really good question/answer list, to pose to a "supposedly" knowledgeable exotics vet. If you want to know and educate yourself, really "arm" yourself with accurate information on guinea pigs, check it out ! ( Unless you have already) :)

Good luck and warm wishes to you and your son's piggie pal!

There is an article by a Dr William Shaw (International Medical Veritas Association) 2007 Bicarbonate Lessons in Cancer and General pH Management about the use of baking soda solution being injected into mammary cancer and resolving the tumour completely; and bicarbonate of soda taken internally with maple syrup (both of course highest grade and the baking soda without aluminium or gluten additives)...

You may wish to ask your cavy savvy vet to look into this research in case they can adapt the findings for the benefit of the cavy population.

It never hurts to look at the advances in options and it may or may not suit you at all to know about this. But it may help give your vet a new option - it was published in the Uncensored magazine of June - September 2007.

I wish you very good luck in your process.
