Hi guys,
I was wondering if it would be safe to burn a candle in the same room that the piggies are living in? I love burning candles but I have not since I got the piggies and was wondering if it would make them sick, as I know that they have sensitive respiratory systems.
If not regular candles are there any special candles that I can buy.
Thanks for your help:cool:

Air fresheners, scented products, aerosols and candles should be avoided. Guinea pigs are very sensitive animals and due to them being extremely prone to respiratory problems, it's just not a good idea.
If you really want to enhance the smell in your piggies room in a safe manner, maybe try a strong-scented herb plant? That way the piggies can also have some home grown parsley or cilantro (coriander for us aussies) to get for snacks

I always try to avoid artificial fragrances like scented candles, air fresheners, and aerosols. I mean, inhaling chemicals can't be good for you. I will sometimes use an essential oil diffuser, but in a different room. Though some of it may creep into the pig room, it is just a little bit and I keep the door closed. I know some people on here don't agree about diffusing essential oils, but we all have different opinions. Here is a link you may want to read http://wellnessmama.com/22656/dont-use-scented-candles/
Oh, and also, you can make your own beeswax candles! Here is a link to a tutorial, they used a fragrance oil, which is usually artificial, so I would use some essential oils http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/home-crafts/pure-honey-beeswax-candles/
Also, ever heard of orange candles? They don't last long but hey, its a candle! http://www.instructables.com/id/Orange-Candle/
And I forgot to mention, potpourri is also a wonderful way to smell delicious natural aromas, here is how to make a festive one! http://www.iheartnaptime.net/stove-top-potpourri/

Just so you know, natural candles and essential oils are also chemicals, and no better for you than the "unnatural" kind. You're breathing the by-products of burning wax either way.

Okay, I meant to say artificial chemicals, and at least I'm not inhaling petroleum. Regular scented candles have probably far more harmful chemicals in the waxes than the beeswax ones. And I try to stick with food grade essential oils. I know, when you eat them they don't touch your lungs, but still.
