I went to the "Sydney Pet and Animal Expo" today. Every kind of animal place was there, animal welfare, rescue, pet bedding options, rat and mice people, but no cavy people. This was not a "SHOW" show, like the animals are all bred to a so called perfection, basically people had animals in runs and things and information about caring and owning specific animals....but there was no cavy people. There were rats, mice and rabbit people....no cavy....I was so peeved because I paid $14 to get in and found nothing I was looking for. I ended up leaving with a sample bag of wood pellets and a $35 chinese massage that lasted a whole 10 minutes. Next year, I am going to have my own stand....and if anyone wants to join me well that would be great.

It costs big $$ to have a stand at that expo, and is not really open to the general public to just have a standard. It is for businesses and different animal clubs.

The NSW Cavy Club had all intentions on having a stand there - with information on different cavy breeds, lots of posters and info on cavy care for the public to take home.

The person in charge of the small animals there changed hands, and the new person told the club that they did not want posters and information for the public, instead they wanted a display of cavies with a minimum of 100.

This was an absolutely ridiculous request, especially since they only offered an area out in the open under some tarp, and since october is known for its excessive heat it was not ideal conditions for cavies (especially needing to have them there for 3 straight days. The club withdrew from the show.

Hey Guys,

Yeah I'm from Brisbane/QLD and they have never in all the years had a guinea pig stand up here either. Even the rodent and rat club go along each year but never any piggies.

Funny you brought this up because at the moment I'm trying to organise for our rescue to be at the next one up here and to just simply has some sort of stall representing guinea pigs and their care there. I still can't believe there has never been one.

I've heard that they expect alot from the display so Im not sure of the requirements. I think similar to what you've mentioned matt they expect it to be a very big and very professional display.
Anyhow yeah we're currently looking into it up here in QLD I'll put the requirements down in this thread once I've found out more.

I guess the other thing is the cost involved and the time. It runs for a week up here and naturally you'd need to have a decent size team as I'm sure not everyone would be able to attend all day every day for a week. Umm the other thing is what they would expect " piggy wise ". I wouldn't want to see the same pigs there all week or being in the very crowded noisy place with children interfering with them and stressing them so working out how many pigs could be housed would be another thing to consider.

Luckily we have a couple of people that have volunteered to help with displays for the rescue so hopefully maybe we can get these people involved in this upcoming display hehe...

Good on ya Alanas.
i went to one of them a while back now, i even noticed that they even had those small lizards with spikes on them(don't know the name of them), i was surprised too, but i love horses and all animals so i didn't think much of it.
