I am considering switching to using fleece simply because I am tired of the mess my piggies make all over the floor. After reading through posts here it seems se though those that use it seem to like it. Is this the general consensus? I especially liked the idea found on guinea lynx about making a pad of several layers. Think I might hit the fabric stores and see what I can find on sale.

At a fabric store near me called Joann's or something like that. They have 2 peices of fleece for $16.99 (but they put them on sale all the time) the peices are 48in. x 60in. , they also have a whole bunch of clearance fleece.
Some one here posted something about Berber fleece, when I use fleece I use one layer of Berber on top of one layer of polar fleece. Works great, only change every two days, I sweep the poop up every day with dust pan. I only have one piggy right now. I have used those baby crib pads too. One layer of polar fleece on top of on layer of baby crib pad. They are super absorbent.

Stink?

Does it stink at all? I'm thinking of using fleece.

I tried using fleece for my 5 piggers in a 2x8 C&C, and yeah it stinks!! Very badly and very quickly too! I lined the bottom of the cage with newspaper and put the fleece on top of it, and by night time it began to stink. By the next morning, the smell got stronger. And by afternoon, the smell was unbareable and I had to change the fleece. And by the next morning, guess what? I had to change the fleece again because the smell was tooooo much! My pigs loved the fleece, probably because it's all fluffy and comfortable. I liked it too since the pigs loved it so much. But the smell...oh my.....I had to swtich back to using wood shavings.

Does anyone have similar experience with fleece and actually overcomes this problem? I would love to get some suggestions!

No it doesn't stink because I only have one piggy and I use "Odor Eater Pet Bed Inserts" under the fleece they really cut back on odor. Fleece can stink but with the inserts it hardly stinks at all. I got them at Petsmart for 99 cents. I put two in each cage. I started using them because some one else posted them on this site.

One thing I had considered is I have a ton of old cloth diapers and thought about layering these under the fleece and maybe something else under the diapers. Maybe sew them together into a nice pad. Figured the diapers would be pretty absorbant and hold quite a bit and the only cost to me would be the fleece. If i can find some on sale it might be worth at least giving it a try. It seems my two guys don't seem to leave too many wet spots and may just add some extra protection to the spots they use most. I just bought a huge bag of shavings so I have a bit of time to think about it.

Everyone has such neat ideas! Does everyone just use the fleece folded over? Are there directions for making one of those pads somewhere? Sorry if I missed it but I'm in a bit of a hurry today. Thanks! =)
