Is a 2 x 3 cage with a second level okay for 2 guinea pigs? The website reccomends 2 x 4..

That's the minimum cage size for 2 GP. It's ok. But do not forget to give alot of floor time.

It's ok, but if there is ANY way you can make the cage fit the 2x4 size, it would benefit your piggies a lot! That's already a lot better than a pet store cage, though, so good job! =)

how big is the upper level?

upper level

Just make sure the access to the upper level doesn't block lap-running space on the first floor - the point of the cage size is so the pigs can run around the whole outside of the cage (hence putting hidey-houses in the middle).

We have a 2x3 on the first floor and 1x3 on the 2nd and 3rd floors. All of the feeding takes place on the 3rd floor, they usually sleep on the second floor. The 1st floor has tons of space for them to run around. They have a great house on the first floor that is actually for ferrets. It is soft sided all the way around. Even if I put it in the middle, they always push it to the corner. So, I figure it is their house, they can do what they want.

Thanks for all your replies! I finally picked up some coroplast yesterday and my piggies are in a 2 x 4 cage. We put it on table that is too small for the width of the cage (2 grids). It sticks out about 8 inches. I clipped the coroplast to the grids to make it more stable and everything seems fine, but is there anything else I should do to make it more stable or will it be ok? Also since I decided on the 2x4 cage, how big should the second level be?

Great job on your new cage! The second level can be either a 2x1 or a 2x2, wither will work. It all depends how big of a loft you feel like making and how much Coroplast/grids you have left. If you make a 1x2, there shouldn't be any need for more support for the upper level. If you make a 2x2, though, you might want to put a column (built out of Coroplast or a piece of pvc pipe) underneath the upper level to keep it a bit more stable. Nice work, and good luck on your new cage! =)
