cage question

I really want to make a c&c cage for my cavy. I have been looking in to so many different designs and such but I have a question. I read this thread on petshub.com https://www.petshub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13119 look at the 7th post. Do you think I could incorporate this idea into a c&c cage?

Don't do it... it's not a great idea. The wire bottoms would be bad, as they'd still get messy. I think it's much easier to just make a simple c and c cage. If you'd like easy cleanup, just lay down sopme newspaper (black and white) underneath the bedding. Then you just have to roll it up.

Ok that works for me. I was not sure because I know that metal wire is bad for there feet but I thought that maybe the rubber netting would make it better. Yah, I think you are right though about not doing it. Also I have heard so much good and bad about fleece what do you all think??

I use towels and I'm guessing fleece would be even more absorbant. 95% of people say they tried fleece and liked it. Its absorbant and poo can be cleaned up easily (I use a dust pan and brush, but a hand held vacuum could equally be used). Its not messy and its very cheap.

Fleece works... if you are willing to change it daily. People who complain usually don't do this.

I havea question.. I built my piggies a new cage.. what do you all suggest I line it with?? its plywood on the bottom?? i have used curtain liner in the past, is that okay???

FLEECE ALL THE WAY! However, you have to understand the most important aspect of fleece. It is NOT absorbant. That is what makes it great. All wetness goes right THROUGH it. We have fleece quilts. We made quits using a layer of 100% poly fleece, 100% cotton towel, and another layer of 100% poly fleece.

The pigs pee on the fleece and it goes through and is absorbed by the towel. The bottom layer of fleece is to keep it from going though to the coroplast. By sewing it all together, it makes it very easy to put down and to clean. We have different fleece on each side so it makes it reversable.

Daily - use a wisk broom or vacuum to pick up poop and hay.
Approx every 4 days - completely change the fleece. Shake out in cage to get off as much as possible. Then just vac or sweep up. Spray with water/vinegar solution, and lay down a new quilt.

To assist with any odor, we lay down 2-3 fabric sheets UNDER the fleece.

Wonderful Idea but I cant afford to buy all that and I dont sew very well.. any suggestions to us "Idiots" But Love your cage... Excellent job!!!!

Actually, the cost is not much. I bought fleece blankets at Sav-On for $3 each ($6 total). The towels as $7. So, for $13 I got 2 - 2x3 liners and had enough left over to make 2 - 1x2 liners for the lofts.

If you can't sew, you always just safety pin them in the corners to keep them together. This just makes it easier to clean, if you can get them to stay together.

I am lucky to have a sister who can sew. I just bribe her with Pepsi!
